college he built up the Bible depart-
ment. His distinctive work was to
standardize the work of the college
and during his term as president the
Institution was recognized by the
State Board of Examiners as a First
Class College.
Dr. J. A. Toltnan was president of
the college during the latter part of
the World War No. 1 period. During
this time the Students' Army Train-
ing Corps was established on the
campus and barracks were ctected.
The pre-mcdlcal courses were added
as were the summer term and cor-
respondence school. Dr. Tolman took
his Ph. D. degree from the University
of Chicago. He left Howard Payne In
1010 to becomo the president of the
Oklahoma Baptist University.
Succeeding Dr. Tolman was Dr. L.
J. Mlms who took the office In 1010.

months the Boys' Dormitory Fund
has been launched but has been hin-
dered due to war time piessuic.
Field. Geneial Carter is a foimer student of Howatd Payne and is the
first ex-studnt to receive such a rank.
Mrs. Z. T. Huff To Be
El Council Co-Sponsor
A unique party took the place of
the Elementary Council meeting on
Monday November 13.
The group assembled in 201 of the
Admlslstrntion Building whore they
were given slips of paper with instric-
tlons on them. Tho next pait of tho
procedure resembled a tieasure hunt
in that each girl was instrufted to go
to a certain point where she was ad-
vised that the group should go to Mrs.
j. T. Huff's for the lest of tho patty.
At Mrs. Huff's the gioup entertain-
ed small children who had been Invit-
ed to the patty. They played chil-
dten's games and later rcficshmcnts
of punch and sandwiches were served
to about eighteen guests.
Mrs. Z. T. Huff who is vitally in-
terested in the nut scry schools of the
city nnd in the elementary work has
consented to be a co-sponsor with
Miss Frances Merritt.

Vinson Family will be
Long Remembered
To HPC Students
Among the names associated with
he past history of Howard Payne
stands the woid "Vinson."
To students both old nnd new it re-
fills vivid memories and stories of
hnse who bote that name and their
connection with Howard Payne Col-
'ego. W. D. Vinson was one of the most
imminent pioneer preachers of West
Texas and for awhile he was a stu-
'ent in Howard Payne College. He is
credited with helping to start many
small chinches all over Btown and
'oleinan counties.
His three daughters Lena Grady
Blanche and a son Truett have all
attended Howard Payne College.
Miss Lena V nsun has been employ-
ed for some time in the main office
and nil who knew her came to love
her for her sweet and charming ways.
In commemoration of her father
Miss Vinson inised sufficient funds
to install a new unit in the Min ster-
ml Couit.
Each year Truett Vinson and sis
tor Lena have contributed n prize to
ho nthlote having an outstanding
scholastic recotd and who has also
letteied in one or moie mnjor sports.
This is presented on Commencement
Day.
Truett Vinson has also contr buted
ninny volumes to the college library.
