We need help
The recent changes in staff positions in two of
Howard Payne's student publications reflect what
many students and faculty do not know that the
Howard Payne journalism department is un-
dermanned. The production of three student publications a
newspaper yearbook and magazine should be no
trouble to a journalism department. Yet it is. The
department one of the smallest on campus must
carry the responsibility of producing a weekly
newspaper a yearbook and two magazines. The
editors of these publications receive little or no help
and little or no thanks from the student body.
The staff changes had to come because without
them the Lasso would have been scrapped due to
lack of personnel. We have doubled up on respon-
sibilities and are ready to go. But we need outside
volunteers to pick up the time-consuming chores
that are part of putting a publication together.
The three publications represent Howard Payne
as much as a touring or traveling organization. Our
products are seen statewide through subscribers
and contests.
What can I do you ask? Plenty. In the next few
days after we have reorganized the Yellow Jacket
will begin running announcements on available
openings. Think about it. We need your help.
Yellow
We would like to congratulate the Yellow Jackets
on their very successful road campaign that saw
the team knock off two of the conference's top
teams-S. F. Austin and Abilene Christian.
After a dismal football season the basketball
team has returned Howard Payne to the winning
side of a final score.
The team's extraordinary performance on the
road lifted Howard Payne to the 11th ranking in the
National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics's
(NAIA) national small college basketball poll.
And as the team begins a stretch of home ap-
pearances we urge all Howard Payne enthusiasts
to turn out and support the Yellow Jackets to still
another Lone Star Conference basketball cham-
pionship. Thought for the week

Wednesday Jaa. 25 Loren
Young a well-known Baptist
preacher and public speaker
gave a speech on love. To
illustrate his point he drew
upon his experiences as a
coach taking a nothing team to
a championship. The talk was
well-received as evidenced by
the long standing ovation for
him by the students. There may
have been too many
illustrations for the message
but it was a good speech
nevertheless. Grade: B plus.

meetings what can you say
about them? Mostly boring but
necessary as elections and
money-making projects come
up in the spring. No grade.
Monday Jan. 30. Dr. R.
Lofton Hudson Christian

about keeping marriage alive.
He operates the Midwest
Counseling Center with bran

He allowed students to aak
questions during his talk and
expressed some definite ideas
about Bill Gaither and Marabel
Morgan author of the "Total
Woman." The message was
very informative and contained
some good advice about loving
and communicating. This was a
good chapel service. Grade: A-.
