director of the national air races, and he said he would go at once to Logan's
house and attempt to reach a decision. The telephone operator at Cleveland
told us that Logan had apparently left the receiver off, for she was unable to
get him again."
Logan's stubborness was explained by Dr. Ayers the next day, once the
women were safely off for Yuma. It's all made clear in the San Bernardino Suns
Exchange Club Scores Derby Race Director
At the noon hour meeting of the San Bernardino Exchange Club, the members
were still "up in the air" over the women's derby. Mr. Logan was severely
criticized. The discussion brought out alleged incompetency and a charge that
the air race chairman of the NAA had applied too much business to the Derby
and wilfully sacrificed the welfare of the women fliers.
Dr. L.W. Ayers led the attack, blaming the lack of a definite schedule
on the practice of "playing ball" with certain cities to gain greater financial
revenue. "The routing of the Derby was changed at least five times, and Yuma
was included in at least three changes. Most of the women believed that Yuma
would be the second control stop. Three hours after the flight left yesterday,
I received score cards, registry blanks, and other articles to handle the race
here. When Mr. Logan realised the women would call off the race, he was forced
to yield despite his determination to give Calexico the attraction. It was evident
that his persistency was based on a business proposition.", Dr. Ayers declared.
An August 20 United Press dispatch from Tucson, Arizona, makes it even
plainer:
"Several hundred persons gathered at the local airport early today to
watch the Women's Air Derby pass over Tucson. This city, originally listed as a
stopping place, was left out when it failed to make a cash contribution, according to the local aviation committee."
