Rogers follows in father's footsteps
a
KZMK-ZiM K
by David Dolezal
As he slowly walks
across the football field
the familiar sound of
shoulder pads crashing fills
the autumn air.
However this time Dan-
ny Rogers is not the player
but the coach. "It feels fun-
ny" said Rogers com-
menting on the fact that he
will not be playing football
for the first time since his
junior high days.
"I knew that someday I
would quit playing and
start coaching" added
Rogers "but deep down in-
side you always want to
keep playing."
But Danny should not
find it too difficult to adjust
to his new surroundings
since his father was a
coach at Smithville High
School from 1958 to 1971.
When asked if he en-
couraged Danny to become
a coach Mr. Rogers said
with a laugh"No. I wanted
him to do something else so
he wouldn't starve to
death."

.
Danny is hoping his
father's success can rub off
off on him. During Mr.
Roger's coaching stint at
Smithville his football
teams advanced to the
state quarterfinals three
times while playing in a
very competitive district.
When Danny was grow-
ing up his favorite football
team was the Dallas
Cowboys. He got his father
to buy him a complete
Cowboy outfit with the
number "55" on the back.
Whenever Danny couldn't

find someone to play foot-
ball he would persuade his
sister who was 2 years
older than he was.
"The only way I could get
her to play with me was to
give her the Cowboy
uniform and be stuck with
the older equipment."
recalls Rogers. "She would
get the Cowboy uniform
and all I would get was a
beating."
As a kid Danny was
always hanging around the
practice field and helping
his dad. He traveled with
the team to all of the out of
town games as well as the
ones at home.
As Danny grew older he
was very active in all types
of sports. He earned all-
district honors in baseball
basketball and football at
Smithville High School.
Although his father did not
coach Danny during his
high school career Rick
Amick who is now an
assistant coach at Howard
Payne University was his
coach.

After high school Danny
attended Blinn Junior Col-
lege in Brenham. "I didn't
go there to get a coaching
degree" said Rogers. "I
first thought about entering
the business field."
Danny transferred to
HPU after two years at
Blinn. At HPU Danny
played quarterback and
was the punter on the foot-
ball team. He holds the
school record for most
punts and for least in-
terceptions in a season.
Danny decided to enter
the coaching field in his
junior year. This past
August Danny graduated
from HPU. He still
however must do his
student-coaching in order
to get his teaching cer-
tificate and is at
Brownwood High School
this semester as a student-
coach. "As far as which school I
would like to coach for it
really doesn't matter"
says Rogers. "Right now I
would take anything" he
says with a laugh.
