Volleyball:
Lady Jackets sweep tournament
The HPU Lady Jackets
volleyball team captured
first place in the Tex Ann
Classic held at Tarleton
State University in
Stephenville last weekend.
The Lady Jackets swept
three matches in route to
the championship. This
kept the Jackets perfect for
the season with an im-
pressive 6-0 record their
best start in eight years.
The Jackets easily
disposed of the McMurry
Indians in their first
match 15-6 15-9 15-3 to
advance to the next round.

Jackets going for their se-
cond win of the season fell
victim to the top-ranked
Tarleton Texans 16-6 last
Saturday night at Gordon
Wood Stadium.
An excellent crowd was
on hand to witness pro-
bably the best two teams in
the T.I.A.A. this year.
The Jackets already
with a victory under their
belts were trying to take
advantage of the fact that
the Texans might be a little
rusty since this was their
season opener.
Things started to look
good for the Jackets early
in the first quarter as on
their second possession of
the game they drove the
ball deep into Texan ter-
ritory. But then disaster
struck. On a third and
three play from the Texans
34 yard-line Quarterback
Jerrod Summer's pass was
picked off by a Tarleton
defender and he raced 75
yards untouched for

The next victim for the
tough Lady Jackets was
Hardin Simmons Universi-
ty. Hardin Simmons was
ranked number two in the
pre-season district polls
while HPU was number
four. It was the second
meeting of the year for the
two teams. The Jackets
took the first match in five
games and won the
decisive fifth game 15-0.
This match also took five
games with the Jackets

With the extra point split-
ting the uprights the Tex-
ans were on top 7-0.
The Jackets once again
mounted another long
drive deep into Texan ter-
ritory but the offense sput-
tered and were forced to
settle for a field goal at-
tempt. Larry James a
freshman kicker from
Cleburne hooked a 36-yard
attempt to the left. The
first quarter ended with the
Jackets dominating the
game but not the
scoreboard as the Texans
took a 7-0 lead into the se-
cond quarter.
The second quarter saw
the Jacket defense put on a
sensational goal line stand.
The Texans had a first
down on the HPU two yard-
line but were forced to set-
tle for a 25-yard field goal.
Neither side was able to
mount any serious scoring
threat and the Texans went
into intermission leading
1(H).
In this final match of the
tournament the Jackets (
easily crushed Tarleton'
15-9 15-10 15-11 to come
home with the first place
crown.
Allison Lewis and Vicki
White were named to the
all tournament team.
Assistant Coach Peggy
Davis credited the recent
success of the team to the
maturity of the players and
their willingness to play
together as a team.
The third quarter belong-
ed to the defense as both
teams tried to put their of-
fense in gear. The Texans
generated enough offense
to put three more points on
the scoreboard and led 13-0
going into the final period.
The Jacket fans were
looking for the hometeam
to pull another rabbit out of
the hat like they did the
week before against Austin
College. Their hopes were
dimmed however as the
Texans inarched down the
field and looked as if they
were about to plunge ahead
20-0 as the ball stood first
and goal from the four
yard-line.
Once again the Jacket
defense rose to the occa-
sion and forced the Texans
to settle for another field
goal their third of the
game.
With 8:40 left in the game
the Jacket's chances look-
ed slim. However the
never-say-die Jackets
drove the ball right down

Jackets were back in
business.
The try for the two-point
conversion failed however
and the Texans held a com-
fortable 16-6 advantage
with two minutes left in the
game.
The Jackets went for the
on-side kick but an alert
Texan was able to scoop up
the loose pigskin and the
visiting Texans ran off the
remaining time on the
clock to preserve the
victory.
With the loss the Jackets
now stand 1-1 on the year
and the Texans open up
their season with a victory
