Angela Corley Crowned Homecoming Queen
i w.cla Corley a senior from Dallas
has been crowned Howard Payne
Homecoming Queen in coronation
ceremonies at Mims Auditorium today.
Sandra Davis a junior was elected
princess. Other nominees were Laura
Arcos Shelley Codecs Melissa Garner
and Christy Hill.
The six nominees were introduced by
Dr. George Baker and his wife Sara.
After the introductions 1989
Homecoming Queen Leslie Marriot was
escorted to the stage by Dr. Don
Newbury HPU president.
Dr. Donna Maples presented the
Bakers with the envelopes the first
announcing Davis as princess and the
second announcing Corley as queen.
Marriot placed the crown on Corlcy's
head.
Corley is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Marion Corley. The 1987 graduate
of Skyline High School is a secondary
education major with an emphasis in
speech and Spanish. She was escorted
by Corey Ash. Corley also was a
homecoming queen nominee in 1989.
Davis is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Warnie Davis of Nederland. The
1988 graduate of Nederland High is
majoring in mathematics. She is a
member of Delta Chi Rho Gamma Beta
Phi and the BSU. Davis was escorted by
Jeff McAnally. Before coming to
Howard Payne Davis spent a year at

Royalty for the 1990 Howard Payne Homecoming included Christy

Garner and Princess Sandra Davis.

The other two seniors were Cockes
and Garner. Cockes is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Cockes of
Mesquite. The music major is a 1987
graduate of Mesquite High. She was
escorted by Rob White.
Garner is a religious education
major. Her parents Mr. and Mrs. Cecil
Garner live in Palacios TX. Garner is a
Band Hall Work Begins

Construction has just begun on a
band studio which has been long awaited
by HPU music students and faculty.
This band studio according to
Executive Vice President Dr. Paul
Butler will be acoustically appropriate
for the needs of the music department.
There have been many problems with
the present band hall including its noise
level which is much too high.
The new band studio which is now
under construction is actually only one
part of a 3 -phase project the music
department has planned. HPU hopes to

Brownwood had to wait 28
additional minutes for its first
Presidential rally to commence.
But when former President Ford
made his grand appearance the wait
was all forgotten.
In former President Ford's brief
address he stated the importance of
electing a person of Hugh Shine's
magnitude into office.
He gave four "essential
characteristics" for a politician that
is running for a seat in the House
of Representatives:
1. Experience and exposure in
local government

David Arcos of San Antonio. The 1988
Madison High graduate was escorted by
her brother David a senior at Howard
Payne.
Hill is doing honors work in the
Academy of Freedom. She is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Hill of
San Antonio and a 1988 graduate of
MacArthur High. She was escorted by
Michael Orr.
Other homecoming activities
scheduled this weekend include:
Alumni will gather in the Coliseum
at 6 p.m. for the annual alumni banquet.
Following the banquet Jubilation
Brass Howard Payne's Heritage Singers
and School of Music faculty and
students will present an evening of
entertainment. Students and others may
purchase tickets for the musical concert
from the Alumni Office or at the door.
The annual Homecoming Parade will
begin at the Brown wood Coliseum at 10
a.m. The HPU Alumni Association
will hold its meeting in Mims
Auditorium at 11 a.m.
Saturday afternoon will feature the
football showdown with Tarleton State
University at 2 p.m. in Gordon Wood
Stadium. Following the game the
newest members of the Sports Hall of
Fame will be recognized at 6:30 in Veda
Hodge Hall.
Visits Brownwood
2. Opportunity to serve as a
state legislature.
3. A record of having served in
the armed forces.
4. Have been a business man.
Ford was quick to mention that
Shine had all of these
characteristics.
The former president also
mentioned the names of other
Republican politicians that are
running on this November's ticket;
giving the majority of praise to
Phil Gramm and Clayton Williams.
When the speech was over Ford
and Shine shook hands and
exchanged smiles with the
Brownwood audience.
