Homecoming Expectations Soar
By Bill Carruthers
Oct. 26 & 27 1990 mark the beginning of a new decade for
Howard Payne University Homecomings. This is a decade which
has great expectations of being bigger and better than previous
decades.
Don Jackson Registrar at Howard Payne has seen more
than two decades of homecomings at HPU. Jackson has also
worked under four presidents. He recalls the early years at Howard
Payne to be an enjoyable time of fellowship and fun.
"During the lirsl few years that I was here I worked under
Dr. Newman" Jackson said "Howard Panc was the place to
be The enrollment was at its highest point ever. The atmosphere
and die morale was high much like it is presentl."
During this era the alumni was vciy active. They would
nomi to attend homecoming regardless ol Ihcir busy

"I think that letter jackets arc
not just for people in
athletics. There arc some
people who just don't do
sports but who do
something else that
contributes just as much to
the school. I figure that if
we are getting letter jackets

"Letter jackets should be
rewarded for any recognized

that is. You can achieve

"I don't think letter jackets
should be given for
everything but I don't think
ihcy should be limited to
just athletics. In my high

I he great thing about Howard Pavne is that il is a small
school Jackson said "Small schools can have a family reunion
tpc atmosphere. Whereas large schools miss out on the
fellowship."
Dr. Newbury has brought back the old spirit into a new
Howard Payne. To that we must all be thankful.

Devotional
By: Connie Haynes
"Your eyes will see the King in His
beauty; They will see the land that is
very far off" (Isaiah 33:17).
What is beautiful to you? There are
many answers that the world would give
to that question.
A simple answer would be flowers or
sunsets A more thoughtful or poetic
answer could be love. Then there is the
kind of beauty spoken of in the verse
above.
Flowers and sunsets are pretty. They
are pleasant to look at and they make
the earth a nicer place to live but they
don't really touch our lives in
themselves.
Love has a more intense kind of
beauty. Like flowers or sunsets it also
makes the earth a nicer place to live.
And unlike something tangible like a
flower it does touch your life and make
a big difference. However even the love
we know in this life is only a taste of
the ultimate beauty we will someday
know.
The kind of beauty I am speaking of
now is the kind spoken of in Isaiah
33:17. This kind of beauty is not even
something we can imagine right now.
This kind of beauty we just have to
have faith that God will someday show
us. We have flowers and sunsets to give
us an idea of what beauty looks like
and we have love to show us what it
feels like. But the beauty we will see in
our Lord will not only please us for a
time. It will please us for all time. And
it will not only touch our lives. It will
transform our lives into everything
good-- that which we can imagine and
that which we cannot.
Earthly beauty is something all
people can enjoy but it will not last
forever. Ultimate beauty however will
be enjoyed only by those of us who
belong to Jesus and it will be a beauty
to thrill our very souls eternally.

think that the matter of your

athletic ability should be a

We arc Baptists we arc
allowed to have committees
maybe we should set up one
to come up with a set of
guidelines for awarding letter
