Submitted by Head Coach Lance Drake.
The Howard Payne University tennis team's fall season is
gradually coming to a close. Already the team has played in the
McClcnnan Community College Tourney which hosts some of
the top JUCO's in the nation and have dueled Abilene Christian
which is ranked in the top 10 in the nation in NCAA Division
II. Still remaining this fall arc Hardin-Simmons and Wcathcrford
Junior College. The HSU match is scheduled for Oct. 26 at 2
p.m. here at HPU. The following week Nov. 1 at 2.30 the
men will play WJC in Brownwood. Through those type of
quality matches the players arc beginning to realize that they can
play and compete against top rated players. From the discovery
the plavers w ill be able to reach a new level ol . onfulentc and a

picked it up to take an option run and thiow iIk
winning touchdown to wide-out Jell Jackson in
the right corner of the end one. The drive
which started at McMurry's 47-yard line with
1:09 left in the game was the end result of the
Indians' defense holding the Yellow Jackets alter
the visitors recovered an Indian fumble widi 1:35
left to play.
On third-and-10 from jjicir own 18 the
Jackets were victimized by a very controversial
and costly officiating ruling. Quarterback Brian
Janak hit Keith Crawford in the left fiat for what
appeared to be the first down. After Crawford had
gotten the first down he fumbled into the
sideline. The official spotted the ball down
where the fumble occurred which is the correct
ruling but a McMurry player kicked the marker
backward making the marking well behind the
actual spot of the fumble and thus forced a
fourth down situation. The first down would
have given HPU the game as McMurry had no
timeouts left.
Bui as it was the Indians won the game and
Howard Payne dealt a serious blow to its
championship and playoff aspirations. With a
2-2 conference mark HPU is tied for second
place with Austin College who won 9-7 over
Midwestern and Hardin-Simmons who lost 27-7
to Tarleton. Sul Ross MSU and McMurry are
tied for fifth at 1-2. If the Jackets triumph over
undefeated and nationally-ranked (3) TSU this
weekend and beat HSU in Abilene next Saturday
they will still have to count on either Sul Ross
or Midwestern to defeat the Texans in the
following weeks. Then HP would be conference

Tarleton game in "perhaps his best game ever as
a Jacket" according to linebackers coadi Chuck

This is a must-win game for Howard Payne
and a victory would be a great capping-off to the
101st HPU homecoming festivities.

Above the Law and Cavemen 2 each won
semifinal games Tuesday night to advance to the
men's championship flag football game while
The Show and Bahama Mamas geared up for their
women's tide match-up.
The Cavemen pulled out a heart-stopping
29-28 last-minute victory over Bad Boys. Down
by one point after Richard McEIroy's second
scoring reception Cavemen decided to go for the
2-point conversion and the win. Stan Young
found Steve Camfield in the right corner of the
end zone for the lead and their defense held back a
last-second Bad Boys drive to hang on to the
victory. Camfield also scored on a late
second-half interception to cam MVP honors in
the game.

spots this fall have been the freshmen. Randall Ballew and Bo
Lcgg have both done excellent jobs behind the plate. Richard
Conner from Dallas Carter High has made huge strides in all
phases of the game. Doug Poller from Albany has had a lot of
responsibility chunked on his shoulders but has held up well on
ihe pitching mound. Probably one of the most pleasant
surprises has been Gene Brandstcllcr. Gene is a Brownwood boy
and his tremendous athletic talent is a big assscl to us. He is
playing baseball like a sophomore or junior. Over all the fall
has gone well. Injuries have been few and I contribute a lot of
that to the intense conditioning our pitchers have had to endure
under Kenncmcr and Coach Lane Stahl. Naturally we expect
good years out of returners David White Chris Billings Sam
Blackmon Travis Page Brent Broussard Brent Franklin Andy
Johnson Mike Rogers and Scott Wcstlund just to mention a
few. Also we have several newcomers that will play a big role
in the spring. Matt Matthews Chris Carter David Woodward
and Daniel Sarabia arc just a few that we will be counting on to
come through. I invite everyone to come out and watch the 1st
annual Blue Gold fall classic currently going on. The pitchers
were put on opposing squads then they drafted the remaining
position players to complete their rosters. The winning team
will get a week off when the losing team works on the field for a
week. The tension is very high because of the amount of work
forthcoming. Game time is at 3 p.m. today and at 10 a.m.
tomorrow if a game 7 is needed. We encourage the fans to come
out and watch the Jackets in the spring. I know that I am excited
about the season and the players arc ready to prove to you and the
rest of the state that HPU baseball is for real.
