Cravens "Craves" Competition
By Jeff Bnergen
The 30 time state checkers champion
is playing today in the SUB from 12 to
1 p.m. If all of the slots are filled Dr.
H. L. Cravens will be playing 25
people at one time.
Although this sounds like a
challenge for Cravens lie says "I'm not
going to lose any games." He says that
if someone sits down and plays him a
perfect game it might come to a draw.
Needless to say Cravens is very
confident in his playing ability.
The checker boards will be set up in
a rectangle with Cravens in the middle
and the competition on the outside. "It
will be a little bit slow for the people
on the outside" says Cravens.
There are some basic rules that will
be followed besides the regular rules of
checkers. First you must make your
move while Cravens is in front of you.
He will then make his move and go to
the next player. You must then wait
while he goes through the same process
with all the other players. Second you
must make a jump when there is a jump

to made.
No one has ever mastered the game
totally but "I know everyone in the
country who can beat me." says
Cravens.
This very short list of people
probably does not include any of the
opponents that he will face today.

Chapel Time Message Boards Considered
Senate Discusses New Issues
By Pam Crowder
Finding a better time slot for chapel
and considering the purchase of an
electronic message board have been the
main topics of discussion in Senate
meetings the last several weeks.
The Senate has been trying to find a
more convenient time to have
chapelconvocation because students do
not have enough time to come back to
the main campus from the Academy.
The parking situation at the Daniel
Baker campus and the increasing number
of students at the university are making
the ten minute time slot more
impossible every semester.
The faculty is also trying to find a
solution with slightly different motives
said Dr. Donna Maples Senate advisor.
"The faculty's concern would be
primarily the increase in students and
the need to have more classes at prime
times. Ten o'clock is a prime time"
Maples said. "The faculty is concerned
about the same issues but not for the
same reasons."
The Senate has decided to try to work
with the faculty in spite of different
motives. Hopefully with the same
goal in mind the two groups can find a
solution which will both increase the
number of "prime time" class slots and
make the time before and after chapel
February 151991
Some $1.2 million for the project
already has been raised and additional
commitments are pending.
"We are delighted to have been
scrutinized by one of the nation's largest
and most respected foundations funding
educational causes and found deserving"
said Dr. Don Newbury HPU president.
"And I have no doubt but that the
monies needed to qualify for this grant
will be forthcoming."
This is believed to be the largest
single grant for capital improvement in
the history of Howard Payne DrA

slightly less hectic.
For several months the Senate has
been seeking to find a solution to the
tremendous gap in communication
'throughout the entire university.
Apparently there is presently no
medium that communicates news to
everyone. Seniors do not have to attend
chapel and they do not see chapel
announcements. People leaving town
early on Friday do not see the newspaper
until after the weekend is over. Some
students who only have classes at the
Daniel Baker campus never come to the
SUB or the dorms to see posters and
bulletin boards.
Because of these problems. Senate is
looking into working with other
organizations to purchase electronic
message boards to potentially be hung
in the cafeteria Newman and the SUB. .
Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) has
already bought one. Senate is
considering buying one itself or
cooperating with the athletic
department to buy one and the senior
class is also considering leaving a
message board as its gift to the school
at the time of graduation.

Taylor was sworn in as Senate secretary
