HPU Beats McMurry Faces Cowboys
By Jeff Horch
After a sweet and much needed
homecoming victory against McMurry
38-21 the Yellow Jackets will have an
extra week of rest and preparation until
they meet the much improved Cowboys
of Hardin-Simmons.
The Cowboys comes into the game
3-0 in conference and 5-3 overall. They
are fresh off a 41-14 whipping of
Colorado College.
Hardin-Simmons is not an
exceptionally talented team but they arc
winning by nut hustling their opponents.
"The:- arc going out and out
playing people" said Defensive
coordinator Lonnic Mcmillan. "They are
consistent and do not make a lot of
mistakes."
The Yellow Jackets have already
beaten the Cowboys 21-17 earlier this
season in Abilene. During the Jackets
victory. Cowboy quarterback Tom Enloe
passed for 250 yards while scrambling for
another 48 on the ground. The Cowboys
offense gained a total of 400 yards.
Every time Hardin-Simmons takes
the field they get better and better. Tom
Enloe who sat out three years between
playing football is gradually getting back
into the game.
"He's elusive" said McMillan.
"He's not the fastest player in the world
and he's not the best passer in the world
but he gets the job done."
"He is a winner" added McMillan.
The Yellow Jackets will probably have
to contain Enloe without the play of
middle linebacker Danny Perez. During
the first half against McMurry Perez
sprained his right knee.
"It isn't serious" said Perez. "I just
stretched out some ligaments and I
couldn't go anymore."
Unfortunately His doctor has not
cleared him for Saturday's game but Perez
is still hoping to play.
The Jackets have proved that they
can beat the Cowboys but they must
prove it again this Saturday. The keys to
beating the Cowboys are giving a solid
defensive effort overall.
First the Jackets must stop the
short pass. Second the front line needs
to continue to play tough on the run.
Third and most important the Jackets
need to put pressure on Enloe and not
allow him to scramble.
Kickoff will be at 2 pm at Gordon
Wood Stadium.

Kyle Lichner Enter HPU's Record Books
By Jeff Horch
Along with the victory against
McMurry two Yellow Jackets put their
names in the Howard Payne record book.
During the homecoming game.
Senior receiver Royal Kyle established
himself as Hovard Payne's all-time
leading receiver with 2262 career yards.
"It took a while to get (the record)"
said Kyle. "I should have gotten it last
year but I had a down fall in my season."
Kyle's two biggest fans his parents
Joe and Birdie were exciting but
surprised.
"I didn't know he was that close"
said Joe Kyle. "It came as a surprise to
me." But The Kyle's said their biggest
thrill will come when Royal receives his
diploma.
Kyle credits quarterback Scott
Lichner with a lot of this years' success
in the passing game.
"He deserves (the record)" said
Lichner. "He is a hard worker. He
catches and runs with the ball well."
Also Scott Lichner put his name
in the Howard Payne and TIAA record
book by passing Jerrod Summers
(1986-89) in passing yardage in a season
with 2185.
"Things happen when you have
teamwork" said Lichner. "I'd rather have a
win then a record but I'll take the
record."
