Yellow Jacket Squad
Needs Fans Support
By Jeff Horch
Homecoming has been packed up
and stored away for next year but the
excitement and spirit should stay the
same
For a small college this years
homecoming was everything that a
college football game should be. The
campus was decorated the stands were
packed and the spirit was high.
There was excitement in the air.
The students produced it the alumni
loved it and the players could feel it.
Now I don't want to over do it but there
was a different feeling on the campus
when Friday and Saturday rolled around.
It was the same feeling you had every
Friday night in high school. That
feeling is called 'spirit'.
Unfortunately that spirit leaves
Howard Payne when homecoming leaves.
In high school there was not a question
on where you were going to be on a
Friday night during football season. It
was a given. But why is it not a given
that Howard Payne students will be in
Gordon Wood Stadium this Saturday at
2 pm cheering on their team.
This University prides itself in
having tradition and school spirit. So
why aren't there more students traveling
to away games in Abilene or much less
to home games.
It is not just showing other schools
that we have spirit but it also encourages
our players. Senior middle linebacker
Danny Perez said that the team's
intensity level was higher the week of
homecoming because they knew that a
lot of people would be there.
I am not saying that a packed
crowed will increase the Jackets' wins
but sports is played on emotions and I
guarantee that a player will get pumped
up when he sees the stands full of
screaming Yellow Jacket fans.
The Cowboys of Hardin-Simmons
are looking for a championship this
season. Their next stop on that quest is
this Saturday at Gordon Wood Stadium.
You better believe that their fans will be
making that hour and half trip to support
their team. The real question is will our
fans make that 5 minute trip to support
ours?
You have no excuse. Most of your
parents will be here this weekend you
don't have to go home. Laundry can wait
and you can sleep in til noon and still
make the game so BE THERE!

The HPU Lady Jackets volleyball team had a roller-coaster week playing extremely well
in a straight-set victory over Austin College 15-6 15-13 and 15-10. On the down side
although the Lady Jackets came close against both Wayland and Texas College they lost
both matches in Tour sets each.
