A United Way Message
from President Bishop ...
Last year, more than 1.4 million people from the Houston
metropolitan area received aid from United Way funded
agencies. Employees from the University of Houston
improved their participation significantly with a 43 percent
increase in donations. This year, the need for the services
funded by the United Way has increased, and the cost of
providing these services has also increased.
Please join me in making this year's campaign even
more successful than that of last year. The money for your
gift will be used to support more than 80 local agencies
which provide aid to members of our community through
operations located at more than 225 locations throughout
the Harris-Fort Bend-Montgomery Counties area.
The decision to donate to any charitable organization is
strictly one of personal choice. Even though the University
officially supports the United Way's annual campaign, the
decisions as to whether and how much you wish to give
are yours alone to make. The United Way Campaign has
for many years been the major effort by which citizens of
this community join together to promote the raising of
funds 1o support a range of community-wide services and
aid for those within the community needing help. Your gift
is needed and will be appreciated.
The University of Houston United Way campus cam-
paigns will close at the end of October. During these
remaining days, let's all try to help those who need our
help, people helping people.
Gulf Presents Grant
to UH Engineering College
The Cullen College of Engineering at the University of
Houston Central Campus recently received a $75,000
check from the Gulf Oil Foundation.
The check, which is part of a $225,000 Departmental
Assistance Grant from Gulf, was presented to UH System
President Charles E. Bishop by Dr. C. H. Bowman, presi-
dent of Gulf Refining and Marketing Company.
The grant will be used to assist in the development of a
metaili: and non-metallic materials research and teach-
ing facility in the Cullen College of Engineering.
According to Dr. Roger Eichhorn, dean of the UH Cul-
len College of Engineering, the funds will be used to
purchase specialized laboratory equipment for teaching
and research.
"Metallic and non-metallic materials research is a very
significant area in which the college has already been
doing some work," Dr. Eichhorn said. "Not only will the
grant strengthen our efforts in this area, but it will also help
in recruiting faculty and students."
The purpose of departmental assistance grants is to
further special projects proposed by specific departments
in colleges and universities. In addition to departmental
assistance grants, other phases of Gulf's Aid to Education
Program include undergraduate scholarships, graduate
fellowships, employee gift matching, capital grants, and
various special grants.
