Around 1 970 Dr. A.J.
Turner began the youth minis-
try degree program here at
Howard Payne University.
When Turner started the pro-
gram it was the only one in
existance among Texas Baptist
universities.
Today it continues to be
the only Texas Baptist Univer-
sity of eight that offers a youth
ministry degree. Some of the
others do offer a few youth min-
istry classes though.
"In those days that was
the only thing we had as youth
ministers" said Dr. Gary
Gramling. "When I was a stu-
dent at HPU a lot of us were
youth ministers and were desir-
ing some training and how to be
a vouth minister."
There are currently about
70 students preparing to go into
youth ministry and there are
about 40 students currently

A Ghanaian crowd of more than 500000
greeted President Clinton this week in Accra.
Clinton hailed "the new face of Africa" as he opened
a historic six-nation tour on Monday. Not all was
good though as the people surged Clinton and
fights broke out in the crowd over scarce bottles of
water.

Monday for the third time since he took office. A
spokesman for the White House said the U.S. is
nervous about the impact of this on Russia's
economy. Secretary of State Madeline Albright is
set to go to Bonn to ask what's going on in the Krem-
lin. The Supreme Court ruled this week that
the Boy Scouts aren't included under California civil
rights laws and can exclude gays agnostics and
atheists. The justices said the Boy Scouts are a pri-
vate selective organization and not a business.

ated only 45 minutes before finding him guilty.
A Los Angeles air ambulance that was
transporting a 12-year-old female car-wreck victim
crashed this week at 7:43 a.m It barely missed a

New studies released this week confirm
that our U.S. military continues to lose pilots to air-
lines despite $ 1 1 0000 bonuses. The Air Force said
that 775 pilots left in the first five months of the
1998 fiscal year already 637 more than left last year.
Pilot departures are also sweeping the Navy. Offi-
cials blame this on the condition of military life as
well as booming commercial airlines expanding
their pilot jobs in large numbers.
Titanic equaled the Oscar mark held by
Ben Hur since 1959 when it won 1 1 Monday night
including best picture director and song. It did
however fail to take an acting award and the award
for best makeup. Regardless it is still the all-time
box office champion.
