Cigarette smokers will have
to pay a little more for smokes
hereafter, unleas they roll
their own. A free conference
committee of the House and
Senate has agreed on a bill
which will tax each package
of 20 cigarettes three cents,
tax to be paid by wholesaler
who in turn will charge it to
the retailer and he then charg-
ing it to the buyer. This tax
is supposed to produce five
million dollars annually, one-
half of which goes into the
general fund and one half in-
to the school fund. It is pre-
sumed that the bill as pre-
pared by the free conference
committee will easily pass both
House and Senate.
EARLY TOMATOES PUT-
TING ON FRUIT
Tomato plants in the earlier
planted fields are reported
putting on fruit. Growers are
busy removing the suckers and
topping the plants that have
formed sufficient clusters.
This is not the case as a gen-
oral thing, however. In some
of the fields the plants are
just commencing to bloom. A
number of growers are in-
creasing the amount of ferti-
liser by side dressing methods,
it having been found that this
keeps the plants growing vig-
orously at fruiting
looks as if the-Yoakum section
will get on the market not
more than a week or such a
matter after the Valley crop
commences to move. This sec-
tion has an advantage in
freight rate and haul. The
greater part of the South Tex-
as crop will probably be mar-
keted before the £ast Texas
crop comes on. In the East
Texas tomato belt the earlier
planted fields are well start
ed, but as a general rule the
plants have just been trans-
ferred from the cold frames
to the fields. The crop there
will not commence to move
Until well along- in June. It is
thought that the first car will
go out from . Yoakum about
the same date as last year—
May 7th. Whether the acre
Production will be; as great as
last year remains to be seen.
It 1s stated that in many in-
Ktances insufficient .fertilizer
was applied. If this report is
cSWect there will be a corres-
ponding decrease in produc-
tion. Yoakum shipped some
267 cars last year, with Sweet
Home a close second in num-
ber of cars shipped.—Yoakum
Times.

CHILD BADLY SCALDED
Evelyn, the one and one-
half year old daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Frank 'Peter, was
'Vary badly scalded last Thurs-
day.
The child pulled a pail of
boiling water over. It poured
fiato her face, burning it badly.
Medical assistance was im-
mediately given and she is do-
hkg very nicely, but her face
at this time. She is
reported to be an excellent
patient, coming in for dressing
and never crying at all.—Schu-
latiburg Sticker.
