Finding a Market
for the Producer
1X7ITHOUT ti market, agriculture could not be the
vv basis of our national prosperity, that it is.
Marketing turns production into wealth and those
agencies that help farmers hnd proliiable outlets are
important aids to the country’s welfare. Stripped of
all. discussion, the function of (ho puckers is to hud mar-
kets. Because of their success in doing this, Armour
and Company are today “The American Farmer’s Big-
gest Customer."
Outlets must be maintained
for normal supply. Foreign
sales must be developed for ex-
cess yield. In a shortage of
any produot, acceptable alter-
natives must be distributed to
relieve the need and to keefe
markets ready when the yield
Is again heavy. Fresh com-
modities which will not bear
transportation, and would thus
be unprofitable to produce,
must be packaged for reserve
use elsewhere. There must be
manufacture and sale of all by-
products. And these are
among the services which Ar-
mour and Company render—
one of the economic reasons
why wo handle food In so many
different forms.
To perform efficiently, our
entire tyttem hat to operate at
a whole. It will net function
piece-meal. Our preparation
plants, at points where foods
are grown, would become
choked without our four hun-
dred Branch Houses absorbing
production. Our Branches,
carrying the several days’ re-
serve supply that makes users
, well nigh Independent of rail-
road uncertainties, must con-
tinually wage a competitive
light for sale* We must finance
producers for the thirty, sixty
or ninety days necessary—pay
> cash for raw products, and
then prepare, transport and
- sell on customary credits. Our
refrigerator cars have to be
steadily carrying the supply
forward to the tobies of the
nation. Aa the Interstate Com-
merce Commission in 1U report
of August last says:
"The carriers (railroads) of
the country could not so effec-
tively handle the entire refrig-
erator car equipment as is now
done by the intervention of pri-
vate owners. TJia meat packer
could no more do businese on
an economical and efficient
baals without his private ears
than he could without his
modern equipped refining or
packing plant.”
Marketing, however, does not
consist merely In taking what
producers offer and selling It
Scientific selling must begin
with the best growing of those
foods the country most needs.
To this end our Farm Bureau
was inaugurated—as a point
of contact with, growers and
to help bring about a better
understanding of mutual prob-
lems.
And It is largely because
Armour and Company are thus
continuously working to mar-
ket the products of the Ameri-
can farm that you are sure of
steady food supply. Under-
standing this, you must appre-
ciate that in asking yoiir dealer
for Armour Products you are
lending your support to a sys-
tem that works to the country’s
economic good and to your own
best Interest.
