Oil is Texas' major source of wealth. Unheard of 50
years ago, the Texas oil business today contributes di-
rectly or indirectly to the success of every , other busi-
ness activity in the state. The Hunijble Comp<toy is in
the oil business; it produces oil,"refines it info fhotor
fuels, motor oils and other products, and markets tftesS
through Humble service stations and Humble dealers.
It knows what this oil business means to Texas, but
more than that—it realizes >frhat Texas means to this oil
business. The appreciation of this fgct stands _behind.

,J. H. Baker’s Diary
(continued from front page)
went to I. W. Cox's and staved all
night. Qyite a shower of rain fell
this evening. My horse was so
tired that I had to walk a good porj
,tion of the day.
Thursday, April 19, 1860. After
arranging my papers and getting
instructions from I. W. Price as to
the duties of Assessor and Collec-
tor, 1 secured a fresh horse and
started on a tour for him. Met a
number of men on Palo Pinto
Creek on their way to the precinct
to give in their property. We
stopped by the side of the road
and I took an inventory of their
property and received their tax
money.
Sat. April 28, I860. Came to
Palo Pinto after being absent ten
days traveling over quite an extent
of country, taking a fairly large list
of taxable property, about 85 polls.

Spent most of the day in town
putting down the tex list, preparing
the court house for court next week
and making out and returning my

hands if f am not a candidate for
sheriff, to all of whom I replied,
•No."
Sundav, April 29, I860. Still
cool this morning. Parson Slaugh-
ter preached one of his long ser-
mons thismor.ning. He preached
again at 4 p. m. His subject mat-
ter is good but the length of
his sermons serves to detract from
their interest.
Monday, April 30, 1860. A lot
sale this afternoon. I bought one
of 3 acres for $36. The first town
property I have invested in.
Wed. May 2, I860. Court still
in session but does business very
slowly. I have done nothing of
importance all day. Hope I may
not spend another day utterly des-
titute of interest or profit. We
hear that the Indians are in the
county again stealing horses.

We read with interest a recent
article in the Fort Worth Star’
Telegram about our good friends,
Mr. and Mrs- j. M. Miller of San-
to. They are new members of
the West Texas Pioneer Associa-
tion, and have lived in Palo Pinto
and Erath Counties more than half
a century. The Miller ranch had
the first Hereford bull in this coun-
ty according to Miller. "Father’s
bull produced a fine herd which,
was scattered during the deprea
si on of 1887," he said. Mr Miller
spent I I years in the saddle and
27 years as a teacher in the
schools. "Now if I could be grant-
ed one wish," he says. I'd probably
say, "Gimme back my boots and
saddle."
