THE WAH WHOOP
Movie
'2001' Spans
2001
Stanley Kubrick has created a
milestone In film re elation with
his motion picture "2001 A Space
Odyssey " The movie takes the
viewer into a sphere of beauty
both visual and audible and fires
his sense1; through an eerie jour-
ney of space and time
"2001" is quite unlike the gen-
eral gamut of films offered to the
American moviegoer Ten years
ago such a production would have
bci'n classed as science fiction;
tind although the setting involves
a future 32 years from now the
recent Apollo 8 flight which orbt-
td the moon seems to place
'2001" on the edge of the con-
ventional The music strikes your cars
with .i swell of deep refinement
unlike the usual sound track of-
ferings wc hear today Reflect-
ing the told and lonely beauty of
deep sp itc the music possesses a
certain tuneless quality.

Review
Time Space
for the viewer. From the pre-
historic landscapes of the begin-
ning to the silent starscapes of the
middle to the wild spectral mind-
scapes of the end the movie
scores a unique sensational im-
pression across your eyes
The plot and story line come
in sensory bursts which the
viewer must connect for himself.
This requires more than merely
sitting in the theatre being pas-
sively entertained for one must
not only receptive but percep-
tive as well Ihe end product of
watching the movie in this way
is a memory different for every-
one but a memory of significance
Some see "2001" as a profoundly
religious movie Others see it as
an art film of little other than
novel interest Some see it as a
documentary of tomorrow while
others go to ' bomb their minds"
on a "legil LSD trip " The true
thread to unravelling the movie
must lie in the mind of the in
dividual viewer
' 2001" is a thinking man's
movie But it is also a movie
!.. (i. r i..i .ii j
u. i.iwo Ui ...B i-uuuuuu """
aesthetic pitch It seems to be
made with a certain classical
chrity that surpasses the label of
' simply another movie in 10G9 "
Perhaps it will be seen as an un-
stity contemporary movie when
it is re-run in 2001
