Cagers In Action

period of time the McMurry

ing ten
The victories have come over

not averaged quite two free

As far us team stats go an un-
ique situation exists in that
both the Indians and their oppo-
nents are shooting -16 GT from
the field And almost as unique
is free throw shooting where the
Indians are shooting 72 9T
while the opponents arc hitting
72 4T The Indians are out-
rebounding opposition 40 fi to
38 9 but are getting outscored
7-1 2 to 71 8
So at the end of this wrap-up
let me tell ou that the Indians
next action is tonight against
Lubbock Christian College with
tip-off at 7 30 p m Then Satur-
day night the Indians host Way-
land Uaplist Both games will be
South Zone TAC games and the
Indians could greatly improve
their position with two wins

Wish Those Days
Looking back on when I was a
little burr-bended boy I can
remember when people would
become angry if they couldn't
get into the gym to see the
McMurry Indians play. Those
were the days of a real
"homecourt advantage." Even
last yenr when 1 didn't have n
burr-haircut McMurry had a
resemblance of n homecourt ad-
vantage. Too many people think that a
homecourt advantage means
that one team has a distinct edge
over another team just because
they nrc playing on their home
floor. Now 1 will not deny that
in some cases playing on a floor
that you have practiced on for
three or four months does have
its advantages but the fact is
that all basketball courts arc the
same length all football fields
are the same length all tracks
arc the same distance About the
only sport that 1 can think or
that has a "homecourt advan-
tage" is golf and it is called a
homecourse advantage No two
golf courses are the same
No what I'm getting at is that
the real "homecourt advantage"
in almost all team sports is the
home FANS When you have
2000 screaming people jelling
for one team it tends to make
the other team nervous and
upset If you look at the teams
across the nntion with tremend-
ous homecourt records like
the UCLA Bruins Notre Dame
and even on McMurry's scale
Midwestern State ou will find
that the key to their success on
the home floor is the home crowd
which fills their gym every
home game and really gets be-
hind their team. You can ask
anbody who has played the
game of basketball before and
he will toll you that playing be-
fore a "packed house" at home
puts ten or fifteen points
psychologically on the
scoreboard for his team before
the game has even started
Usually teams play as well as
the home fans wnnt them to
sometimes better and some-
times worse. Crowds play a tre-
mendous role in a basketball
game for the players one that
most spectators don't realize
When you're watching a basket-
ball game and you can see that
player out on the floor who is
putting everything he has into
the game and you can see the
expression on his face when
something good or bad happens
it tends to get vou involved emo-
tionally before you know it
Thus ou have a homecourt ad
vantage
This season McMurrj has had
its faithful group of fans who
come every home game and veil
their heads off and reall.v get be
hind their Indians and trv as
hind as they can hut that is
just the point I am trjing to
make these people huve onl.v
numbered four or five
HUNDRED every game and
Hunt Gym can seat 2200 peo-
ple! What I am asking is where
are ou who make up the other
1000 or 1700 Mnbe ou have
to study or go to a meeting or
what-ever Well let me tell ou
something You are missing the
best entertainment available in
Abilene and it doesn't even cost
ou a penny to get in 1 realise
that there are sonte reasons for
which some of ou can't make it
for one or two games but it
seems to me that a person would
want to break away from the
books every once in a while and
games only last an hour and a
hnlf or two hours
Ma.vbe some of ou think that
since the school has dropped
scholarships that the athletic
program has dropped along with
everything else What mi are
forgetting is that men's basket
ball still has pla.vcrs that are re
ceiving scholarship help In fact
9 of the 12 placrs that suit up
for the varsity games are on
scholarship and I would put
Nicky Martin and Steve Mackey
up against anbod in the Tex-
omn Athletic Conference as far
as playing ability goes Both
