Convocation Greets McMurry Newcomers
Freshmen students will be erect
ed by faculty and administration
during the annual Freshman Con-
vocation at 7 p m Sunday Aug. 24
in Aldcrsgatc Methodist Church.
Convocation is open to fresh-
men their parents faculty and staff.
Immediately following the cerem-
ony a reception will be held in the
lobby of Amy Graves Ryan Fine Arts
Center. The reception hosted by
Indian Insight will honor fresh-
men and their parents
The Convocation which fea-
tures faculty and administrators In
full academic regalia also will
honor this year's recipients of the
William Fletcher McMurry Scho
New Phone
One of the hassles of starting col-
lege life has been eliminated for
McMurry students this year.
No longer will students have to
put up a deposit and wait for a
serviceman to Install a telephone
in their dorm room.
The McMurry telephone system
has been installed to provide free
local service to the college and Its
students. For dorm residents that
means just bringing a touchtonc
phone to school and plugging It in
said Dill Masscy comptroller.
It also means no deposit and no
installation fee. The only cost to
students will be for long distance
service. McMurry College has chos-
en StarTel for Its long distance
company and encourages students
to do likewise because of the sav-
ings and case of use.
Students who open a StarTel
account which costs nothing will
receive a 20 percent discount on
all long distance calls local and
long distance directory assistance
and easy accessibility through the
phone system
Tribe Seeks Victories Under New
The McMurry Indians will be
sporting a new look when they
take the field against Kansas Wes-
Icyan College in Sallna Kansas for
the first game of the 1986 season
on Sept 13
New head football coach Cliff
Odenwald will bring In a revised
offensive strategy to go along with
a new 5-man defensive front setup
Odenwald said The offense will be
a combination of the pro-I set and
the wing set
larships.
Five incoming freshmen will be
presented during the ceremony as
having earned a scholarship of full
tuition and fees provided the stu-
dent retains a 3 25 or above grade
point average.
The students selected on the
basis of scholastic and leadership
qualities include Brian Heck of
Spring Jeff Matslcr of Floydada
Elizabeth McMlllin of Clyde Phil
Shuicr of Abilene and Laura Wyatt
of Levclland.
Dr. Ron Presley professor of
business administration will wel-
come the students on behalf of the
McMurry faculty. Dr. Paul Jung-

Masscy emphasized that even if
the student has another long dis-
tance service he or she still may
sign up with StarTel free of charge.
Persons who sign with StarTel will
be included in a drawing for a
Panasonic phone answering ma-
chine. A representative from StarTel
will be In the Campus Center next
week to sign people up and to dis
Freshman Elections Upcoming
Elections for freshman class of-
ficers for the McMurry Student
Government will be held Tuesday
Sept. 16 and any Interested new-
comer Is urged to consider run-
ning for one of the six vacant posi-
tions Freshmen will elect a class pres-
ident and five Senators to serve on
the MSG Students who are inter-
ested in running first must pick up
a petition from the MSG office In
the Campus Center. Petitions open
The Tribe will be anxious to
turn around a tough 1-9 campaign
in 1985 in which they lost four
games by a total of only 1 0 points
Kansas Weslcyan will be one of
three new opponents the Indians
will face during the 1986 season
The Tribe's first home game will be
Sept. 20 against Lambuth College
of Jackson Tennessee. The Indians
will then travel to Goodwcll Okla-
homa to face the Panhandle State
Aggies before opening up the TIAA
meycr dean of the college will
speak on behalf of the administra-
tion. The President's Address wilt
be delivered by McMurry presi-
dent Dr. Thomas K. Kim.
On Monday Aug. 25 freshman
orientation will be held In the
Mabce Room In the Campus Cen-
ter. Orientation will be held from
10 30 a m. to noon and from 1 to 4
p m. Orientation for transfer and
non-tradition?! students vill begin
at 7 p m.

freshmen will be welcomed by
faculty and the campus minister
prior to informational sessions and

required number of classmate sig-
natures on the petition the stu-
dent must return the petition to
the MSG office no later than Mon-
day Sept. 8. Speeches and elec-
tions will be held Sept. 16
MSG President Mark Taylor will
explain the procedure to incoming
freshmen during orientation Mon-
day Aug 25.
The MSG meets weekly to dis-
cuss Issues to concern to students
Conference race at home on Oct. 2
against the Austin College Kanga-
roos. Homecoming game this year
will be on Nov. 1 against the Tarlc-
ton State Texans and the Indians
will wrap up the season on Nov. 1 5
when they travel to New MexlcO to
meet Western New Mexico Uni-

underway at 5 pm. Monday In Wah
Wahtayscc Park. It will be followed
by a movie from 7 to 9 and a dance
from 9 to 12 both in the campus
