Short Course For Farmers Planned j
In Sinfon Starting on October 27th 4
A farm management seminar
will be held in Sinton at the
county homemaking building Oc-
tober 27 through 30. All area
farmers and other interested
persons are invited to attend.
Meetings are set for 7:30 p-m.
The prupose of the seminar,
which is jointly sponsored by the
Nueces and San Patricio County
program building committee, is
to provide Coastal Bend Pro-
ducers with techniques arid
knowledge which will enable
them to realize a higher net in-
come from their productive in-
puts.
The speaker for the four-night
shortcourse are Extension Spe-
cialists from College Station,
Weslaco and local resource per-
sons.
Topics to be covered Monday,
October 27 are, Costs and Re-
turns for Coastal Bend Crops,
and Using Resources Efficients

agement ecisions. The Tex-
as Minimum Wage Law and
Using Child Labor in Agricul-
ture will also be covered.
At the last session on Thurs-
lay John J. Seibert, Extension
Grain Marketing Specialist, will
discuss marketing of agricul-
tural products — Getting the
Most Dollar for Your Product.
Trends in Agricultural Credit
will be discussed by Maurice
Selby, president of Commercial
State Bank. The last topic for
discussion will be The Farmers
Responsibility in Obtaining Cre-
it. Alan Reichard, area farm
management specialist, Wesla-
co will cover the topic.
Project Started
By Church Group
Preacher Going
To India on
Mission Trip
The Rev. Floyd Conner, pas-
tor of First Baptist Church, will
leave on November 3 to parti-
cipate in the New Life Cru-
sade in India. He will be doing
missionary work with a group of
75 other Baptist ministers of
Texas. There are other groups
of ministers who will be cover-
ing other sections of India.
The group with whom the Od-
em minister will be working
will leave from San Francisco.
They will go to Honolulu, Tokyo,
and Hong Kong and orientation
sessions will be held in Hong
Kong before the group travels
into India. They will do their
missionary work in the Tel Aviv
area. They will visit the Holy
Land, Rome, London and New
York before returning from the
three-week mission trip.
Mr. Conner’s trip is sponsored
by the Odem First Baptist
Church with a $2,200 fund hav-
ing been set up for him several
months ago when he was invit-
ed to participate in the mission
work.
During the pastor’s absence
the pulpit at the Church will
be filled by Harry Mohrmann,
director of athletics in Odem
High School who is an ordained
Baptist minster.
MYF To Hold
UNICEF Drive Here
The United Methodist Youth
Fellowship will participate in the
annual “Trick or Treat’’ drive
for funds for UNICEF. The drive
will be held from. 5 p.m. to 7
pm. on October 26. The young
people will be properly identi-
fied with cartons from UNICEF.
The UMYF solicits the same
cooperation which the commun-
ity has given in past years.
Kiwanis Club
Installation Set
For Next Tuesday
The installation of officers for
the Odem Kiwanis Club will be
held at the school cafeteria at
7:30 p.m on Tuesday. Robert
Barlow will be installed as pre-
sident of the club succeeding
Stanley Webb in.
Favorites Of
High School
Are Chosen
The names of school favorites
were announced at the annual
Personality Ball Saturday night.
Love is Blue was the theme of
the ball, Synthetic Delusions
was the band number played to
further the theme. The annual
staff and its adult sponsor, Mrs.
Blake Briscoe, sponsored the
dance.
Favorites named were: Albert
Aleman and Porfiria Nunez, se-
nior; Lydia Garcia and Juan
Hinojosa, junior; Irma Chapa
and Mario Martinez, sophomore;
Trudy Carrell and Glen Miller,
freshman; Cruz Lopez and
Paula Montgomery, Mr. and
Miss Sportsman; Porfiria Nunez
and Dale Lane, friendliest; Mar-
tha Shackelford and Dale Lane,
best citizens; and Albert Aleman
and Mary Lou Botello, Mr. and
Mrs. OHS.
C. L. West Is New
Member of School
Head Association
Supt. C. L. West was in San
Antonio Wednesday night where
he was initiated into the Red
Rose Chapter of the Texas Ass-
ociaton of the School Administra-
tors. The initiation was held at
the convention center.
Flag Football
Game Held
Last Friday
The annual flag football game
by the Odem Elementary 5th an
and 6th grades was held Fri-
day in the high school stadium.
Final score after much effort by
both teams was, 26 to 22 in favor
of the 6th grade.
Touchdowns for the 6th grade
were made by Daniel Martinez
and Joe Galvan, with two for
each, and two extra points were
credited to Joe Galvan. Fifth
grade touchdowns were made by
Jessie Aguirre, who made two,
and Mario Gaona one. Roland
Knoblauch was responsible for
4 extra points.
Cheerleaders for the teams
were chosen by popular ballot
the week before the game. Chos-
en for sixth grade were Jody Ed-
mondson, Kelly Whitaker, Jo
Lynn Barber, Irma Cisneros,
and Esperanz'a Pesina. Fifth
grade winners were Jeannie
Barber, Mary Martinez, Susie
Oelschlegel, Rosalinda Luna and
Diane Mancias.
Coaches, for the teams were
Bill Touchstone, fifth grade, and
Ollie Barrier, sixth grade. Re-
ferees were Hugo Knoblauch
and Jim Rose.
The concesseion stand was op-
en and cold drinks were sold.
The money collected from re-
freshments and the game as
well are to be used to buy ath-
letic equipment for the Odem
Elementary School.
The teachers of Odem Elemen-
tary donated cupcakes which
were sold at the concession
stand and the proceeds were
donated to the Jack'M. Clark
fund. The amount donated was
$18.
Kelly Whetstone was selected
as FFA Sweetheart at a meeting
of th chapter Tuesday night of
last week. The chapter voted in
the same meeting to contribute
$100 to the Jack Clark Fund.
A district grass judging team
went to Beeville Tuesday of last
week to participate in compe-
tition. The team was composed
of Tim Brown, Robert Hennigan,
Jimmy Vickers, and Curtis Dok-
ken. The placed fourth in an
eight-team competition.
The tri-County district voca-
tional agriculture teachers and
administrators banquet was held
at the Red Bam Tuesday night.
Razor Chapman, humorist, was
the speaker. The purpose of the
annual banquet is for the vo-ag
teachers to show their apprecia-
tion of the assistance given by
their administrators in the vo-
cational agriculture program in
the various schools.

Owlets Post
Big Win Over
Shorthorns
The Odem Owlets defeated the
Agua Dulce Shorthorns by a
score of 50-12 last Thursday
night to win then’ fifth game of
the season.
The Owlets scored in every
quarter and put on a .last half
splurge that ran the score to 50
after leading 22-0 at the half.
The Owlets face a stern test at
Banquete Thursday night. The
Owlets defeated Banquete 14-6 in
a tough game earlier and this
one is expected to be a cliff
hanger. Game time is 6 p.m. at
Banquete.
The Women’s Society of Chris-i
tian Service of First United Me-
thodist Church has taken as a
project the knitting of bandages
for lepers in Dabiney, Africa.
Mrs. J.E. Williams will be
glad to teach any women the
art of knitting and all interested
in such a project are invited to
participate. For further details
contact Mrs. Williams.
The Gleaners Class of First
Baptist Church met in the
church annex for a buiness ses-
sion and a covered-dish supper
Monday night of last week, with’
Mrs. Harry Mohrmann as hos-
tess. She served homemade ice-
cream, coffee and tea for the
meal. ,
Mrs. C.E. Brown conducted
the business session. Mr-s. R.J.
White led the opening prayer
and brought the devotional.
Those present were Mrs. H.E.
Cooper, Mrs. C.E. Brown, Mrs.
J.T. McCulloch, Mrs'. Kenneth
Shackelford, Mrs. W.B. Green,
Mrs. B. H. Cornett, Mrs. R.J.
White, Mrs. J.W. Lane and
Mrs. Mohrmans, all members
and two guests, Mrs. Dewey
Mize of Mathis and Mrs. Linton_
Savage of Calallen.
Former Resident Dies
Mrs. Hazel Eva Schreiber,
for many years a resident, of Od
em, died in LaFayette, La. Fun-
eral services were held in San
Antonio Wednesday of last week.
Surviving are her two sisters,
Mrs. Drusilla Turner and Mrs.
R. O. Sealy of San Antonio; a
daughter, Mrs, Fehrenback of
LaFayette, La; and a grand-
son.
