Editor wins medical citation
By Mary Ann George
Staff Reporter
Vicki Rowlls, district news
editor for the Collegian, received a
citation of merit from the Texas
Medical Association for excellence
in communicating medical and health
care issues to the public.
The Texas Medical Association
recognizes the best in Texas media
through its Anson Jones Award. A
panel of professional journalists judge
entries from all over the state.
Outof 109 entries, judges chose
22 to receive citations of merit.
Rowlls was the only winner from a
college; the other 21 winners were
from professional publications.
Rowlls will receive her citation
at a ceremony May 12duringTMA’s
annual scientific and business meeting
in Fort Worth.
The award is named after
Physician Anson Jones who was a
Texas pioneer, statesman and author.
TMA is a professional organization
with more than 29,000 physicians
and medical student members.
To apply for the award, Rowlls
had to send in a published clipping
dealing with a medical or health care
issue. “This is the first award I have
ever applied for,” Rowlls said.
“I was very proud of the article
I wrote. It was a three-part series
acknowledging College Alcohol
Awareness Week. The first article
was about the problem of alcohol
abuse among college students, the
second one was based on an interview
with a student who had alcohol
problems and the third article told
where to get help,” Rowlls said.
"It definitely gives me
hope that what Fm
doing has a purpose."
Vicki Rowlls
Rowlls, a joumalism/sociology
major, has been on the newspaper
staff for two years. She started as a
volunteer staff writer her first
semester and served as entertainment
editor in the spring 1988. She is
district news editor for the school
year 1988-1989 for the new
districtwide newspaper, Collegian.
“Writing is easy forme. Dr. Joe
L. Norton and Diane Turner, of the
TCJC journalism department, have
taught me everything I know about
journalism. I feel prepared to go on to
a four-year university,” Rowlls said.
Besides being a college student
and working on the newspaper staff,
Rowlls is a correspondent for the
Fort Worth Star-TelegramNortheast
Edition. She covers the Richland
Hills City Council meetings, and her
articles appear in the Thursday and
Sunday - - editions.
“I have a book of handwritten
poems I wrote in 1983-1984. Also, I
have started several novels and hope
to finish them someday-maybe even
do a murder mystery,” Rowlls said.
“Newswriting is my favorite
type of story to write. I would like to
go to Washington, D. C., or Austin
and cover political news,” Rowlls
said.
“I feel great about winning. I
really didn’t expect it at all. It
definitely gives me hope that what
I’m doing has a purpose. To be the
only student among all the winners is
an added victory, one I share with
those who support me,” she said.
Rowlls is from Houston and
also attended East Central State
University in Ada, Okla., before
coming to TCJC.
