Aside
\V
......aside from the fact that most
attention in May seems to be paid to
graduation, there’s one day that pro-
bably should be given a bit more
consideration than it gets. Oh sure, it
gets a lot of play in advertising
circles, but mostly in a “buy
something for her” manner. How
about just remembering Mom on her
day? Sunday, May 14, is that one day
set aside especially for Mothers. We
could write a lot about Moms and
what they mean, but years ago a
much better writer said it quite well
when he wrote: “Mothers is the
name of God on the lip and in the
hearts of little children”
......birthdays are something we
all have to deal with, like it or not.
But every once in a while one comes
up which seems to command a little
extra attention. Especially when so-
meone reaches the ripe old age of
101, and even more so when those
years have given so much pleasure
to so many people. Irving Berlin
recently celebrated the first year of
his second century. During those
years he has written many songs
that have meant so much to so many
people. “White Christmas”, “The
Easter Ragtime Band”. “This Is
The Army Mr. Jones”, and, of
course, “God Bless America”.
Songs which have survived the test
of time, and there are many more
that also bear his name. Hardly a
day goes by that we don’t hear one or
more of his tunes. That, in our book,
is leaving a wonderful heritage. We
hope he’ll be around for many more
years, and we know we will continue
to enjoy his gift of wonderful music.
Happy Birthday, belated though it
may be, Mr. Berlin.
......are you old enough to
remember when kids respected the
elderly and accepted their chastise-
ment? The only time you heard the
word ‘race’ was in connection with
horses or a hundred yard dash? Doc-
tors made house calls? Cars had
running boards? Dog sniffed people
out of friendliness rather than a
search for marijuana and cocaine?
You heard from your elected
representatives even if it wasn’t
election time? What price progress?
......author of this one is unknown,
but it says a lot. A hundred years
from now it won’t matter what your
bank account was, the sort of house
you lived in, or the kind of car you
drove. But the world could be dif-
ferent because you were important
to a child!
......this is the time of year when
we learn who the honor grads are at
area schools. Who the youngsters
are who stand high in their classes.
The youngsters we don’t hear as
much about those who get into trou-
ble, the ‘bad apples’. It’s always a
great pleasure to hear about the
good students, the good kids, the
youngsters who will be our leaders
of tomorrow. Congratulations to all
of them! And to the parents,
teachers, schools, and communities
that produced them!

Highway Project
Nears Halfway Mark
Work on the $22.6 million Nueces
Bay Causeway widening project is
entering its second phase of con-
struction and southbound travelers
have been moved to the widened
structure which will eventually
carry the northbound traffic.
Both directions will be routed over
the newly-widened structure for
about a year while the old south-
bound bridge is removed up to the
“hump’,’. A widened bridge to carry
southbound traffic will be built on
the same location.
“Travelers are urged to be alert to
signs and markings and reduced
speed limits in the construction
area,” said State Department of
Highways and Public
Transportation Resident Engineer
Lester Balusek of Sinton.
“Southbound motorists are
reminded that temporary lane
closures can be expected between 9
a.m. and 4 p.m. to facilitate con-
struction operation.” _
Work on the project began in Oc-
tober 1987 and is approximately a
year and a half from completion.
Under provisions of the contract,
both the north- and southbound
bridges will be widened to provide
three 12-foot travel lanes and a 10-
foot shoulder along each side. Work
on the northbound structure is com-
plete. The old bridges were 28-feet
wide and provided two travel lanes
in each direction.
