Conference Set
For Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- “The
Black Family In White Amer-
ica” will be the subject of one
of the several plenary sessions
to be held as part of the Na-
tional Urban league’s 63rd an-
nual conference In Washing-
ton, July 22-25, at the Wash-
ington Hilton hotel.
Appearing on the panel,
scheduled for Wednesday, July
25, will be Dr. Andrew Bil-
lingsley, vice president for
academic affairs, Howard uni-
versity; Dr. Douglas G. Glas-
gow, dean, School of Social
Work, Howard university and
Billy J. Tidwell, senior re-
search associate, Cary Income
Maintenance experiment.
The Black Family will be
only one of a series of Impor-
tant issues affecting black com-
munities to be discussed at the
conference which officially gets
underway on Sunday night, July
22, with a keynote address by
Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., exec-
utive director of the National
Urban league.
Other sessions will come to
grips with such crucial Issues
as revenue sharing, cutbacks
In federal programs, health,
housing, the political system,
and manpower.
Among the speakers sched-
uled for major addresses at
the conference are Senator Ed-
ward Kennedy (D-Mass.), sec-
retary o f Health, Education
and Welfare Caspar W. Wein-
berger; former general coun-
sel of the treasury, Samuel R.
Pierce Jr.; Governor Lin wood
Holton of Virginia; Congress-
man Louis Stokes (D-Ohio), and
former assistant secretary of
the Department of Housing and
Urban Development, Samuel C.
Jackson.
A special feature of the con-
ference will be a panel presen-
tation on Tuesday night, July
24, that will bring together for
the first time the four black
women now serving In Con-
gress. They will be joined by
women legislators from the
state and local level. The panel
will be questioned by a group
of distinguished journalists.
