Lady Owls Suddenly
In Thick Of Tide Chase
By Rusty Weller
And they're off . . .
A sudden nosedive by league-
leading Taft has turned the
District 30AAA race into a virtual
three-team dead heat, with the
Lady Owls right back in the thick
of the title chase.
Odem High's defending district
champs just last week seemed to
have only an outside shot at
retaining their title. The Lady
Owls dedicated the rest of their
season to five straight district
wins in hopes of making the
playoffs. Now, the crown is well
within reach.
After taking Friday off, OHS
brushed aside Goliad on Tuesday,
15-10 and 15-8, despite being
without key performer Joyce
Temple once again. That raised
Odem's league record to 6-2 and
ties the Lady Owls for the district
lead in the all-important loss
column with Taft and Sinton, both
at 7-2.
After looking nearly
unbeatable, Taft has come
unglued. The Lady Hounds first
showed their mortality at
Ingleside, then lost last Friday's
showdown with visiting Sinton,
15-13 and 16-14.
"We've had our obstacles,"
Odem head coach Yolanda Hinojosa
said in practice Wednesday
afternoon. "But we've cleared the
hurdles with dedication and we're
looking good."
Meanwhile, out on the court
behind her, the Lady Owls were all
smiles and full of spirit as they
went through their drills.
And why not? They've been
given new life, and they're 1-0 in
their quest to win the rest.
Next up on the hit list is
Mathis at Mathis this Friday.
Odem again has next Tuesday off
before hosting Ingleside on Oct.
21.
Temple's ankle may be ready or
the Lady Pirates. She certainly is
expected back in time for
Ingleside.
"Mathis will be tough," coach
Hinojosa said. "They're as strong
as Goliad. We hope to go out there
with an aggressive attitude and
take care of business.
"Mathis is strong. They'll be
ready for us, so we've got to go to
our strengths," she said.
Meanwhile, Sinton is at
