SHOWDOWN LOOMS WITH INGLESIDE
Odem To Tune Up At Mathis
By Rusty Weller
Windows will rattle across San
Patricio County when Odem and
Ingleside, like streaking comets,
collide to decide the District
30AAA football championship.
But the blinding collision won't
occur until Oct. 21 at Odem.
First, there's some unfinished
business for the league leaders,
both still unbeaten at 3-0.
Odem, fresh from a 31-7 rout
of visiting West Oso, hits the road
this Friday for a 7:30 p.m. warm-
up with last-place Mathis, which
has yet to win in district play.
Ingleside, which blanked
Mathis last week, 32-0, faces
more than a tune-up, however.
The Mustangs host Sinton, which
has come on strong since being
blasted by the Owls in the district
opener.
Goliad, the only other team
still in the running for a playoff
spot, tangles with Taft this week
after edging Aransas Pass, 40-34,
in another high-scoring onslaught.
Joey Torres is expected to have
a long-distance field day at Mathis
and smash through the 1,000-yard
barrier with a few first downs to
spare. He stands at 923 yards
through six games after shredding
West Oso for 251 yards on 19
carries.
That was his best game yet and
ranks Torres third among
30AAA's rushers behind Goliad's
Elton Perry at 1,168 yards and
Ingleside's Bubba Jackson at 1,029
yards.
Torres has cleared 100 yards
in five of six games so far, rolling
up 98 in the other.

TURNING UP FIELD, Odem High tailback Joey Torres cuts behind one block and looks for another
from fullback Carmel Martinez (38) against West Oso last Friday night. Torres rushed for his
largest total yet this season — 251 yards on 19 carries. Torres scored Odem's final three TDs in a

all three of Odem's second-half
TDs that allowed the Owls to
breeze out of range after a
somewhat anxious 12-7 lead at
halftime.
Odem moved the ball at will
against the Bears on the ground,
amassing and impressive 418
yards. Meanwhile, the Owls' rock-
solid defense limited West Oso to
nine yards rushing.
The Bears did find some
success through the air, with
quarterback Ruben Saldivar
connecting on nine of 16 passes
for 134 yards, including a 28-yard
scoring strike to Adrian
Thompson in the second quarter.
That TD didn't come until after
Odem had tallied twice on a two-
yard run by Freddy Martinez, who
rushed for 101 yards, and a one-
yard plunge by Carmel Martinez,
who had 25 yards to his credit.
Torres put the game out of
reach in the third quarter with
scoring runs of 63, five and 14
yards.
Barring overconfidence, Odem
should enjoy another offensive
explosion at Mathis, which yielded
more than 400 yards to Ingleside.
