Illegal Deer
Costs $1,130
A new rifle got a LaSalle
county hunter into a lot of
trouble. He bought a .22
magnum on one day and used it
for the first time the next
morning at 2 a.m. to kill a
white-tailed doe from the high-
way.
His crime was observed, and
soon game wardens Jim
Daughtrey, Larry Griffin and
John Caudle were chasing him
at high speeds, across three
counties.
The hunter paid dearly when
the game wardens finally
caught him. Fines totaled
$1,130.30 on charges of fleeing
and evading a peace officer
and illegal night hunting.

Last Saturday the Pirate
Band performed at the United t.
Interscholastic League’s
Regional Marching Contest in
Robstown, in competition with
other AA bands for ratings of
first, second, third, fourth, and
fifth division. The Mathis band
was awarded a third division
for its efforts. Band director
William Cox stated that the
band deserved a second
division rating, and in any case
gave a performance equal to
that of the George West band, i
which received a first division.
Last Friday night the band
performed the contest show at
halftime at the Odem-Mathis
game, dedicating it to the
senior band members, who
performed in their last half-
time show that evening.
Therefore, the last honor of
Bandsman of the Week for this
season is dedicated to this
year’s senior band students, ,
including Naomi Aleman,
Philomena Blackard, Jeff ♦
Bream, Lynn Gorley, Jon
Gregory, Mary Griffith,
Pamela McCown, Oscar Pena,
Carrie Person, Luciano
Rivera, and Nancy Wren, in
recognition of their con-
tribution to the Mathis Pirate
Band this year and in past
years.
In coming weeks the band
will be preparing for the i
Christmas concert season and t
for the concert activities next
spring. With hard work and
perhaps better luck, the band
will receive a higher rating at
the U.I.L. Concert Contest.
