Farm Bureau celebrates
Food Check-Out Day
American farmers, ranchers producing
more food on fewer acres
State collects $1.3B in sales tax revenue
America’s farmers and ranch-
ers are the most productive in
the world, which creates afford-
able prices at the marketplace for
American consumers.
As a result, the San Patricio
County Farm Bureau is celebrat-
ing Feb. 7 as Food Check-Out
Day.
On average, American fami-
lies spend approximately 10 per-
cent of their income for food.
Applying the 10 percent statistic
to the calendar year shows the
average household will have
earned enough income for its
annual food supply in about 40
days.
The positive message is glar-
ingly visible when you consider
Tax Free Day is not celebrated
until mid April - about two
months later, to commemorate
when the average household will
earn enough money to pay for
local, federal and state taxes.
“I find it amazing the American
people can pay their yearly food
supply about two months earlier
than it would take them to satisfy
their tax burden,” said David
Krebs III, president of the San
Patricio County Farm Bureau.
“Not only is America’s food sup-
ply the world’s fastest, but it’s
also the most affordable.”
Thanks to modern farming
techniques, such as biotechnolo-
gy, global positioning satellites
and conservation tillage,
America’s farmers and ranchers
are producing more food on
fewer acres.
However, farmers and ranch-
ers only receive 19 cents out of
every dollar spent on food at

Texas Comptroller Carole
Keeton Strayhorn said that the
state collected $1.35 billion in
sales tax revenue in December,
up 8.3 percent compared to
December 2003.
“Our state’s great economic
engine is improving. We have
experienced 16 months of posi-
tive sales tax growth,” Strayhorn
said. “In my biennial revenue
estimate, delivered to the 79th
Legislature, I predict sales tax
revenues will increase 4.1 per-
cent in fiscal year 2005, 3.6 per-
cent in 2006 and 4.8 percent in
2007.”
Strayhorn sent cities, coun-
ties, transit systems and special
purpose taxing districts their first
sales tax allocations of 2005.
January payments to local gov-
ernments total $329.1 million, up
8.6 percent compared to January
2004.
January sales tax allocations
of $223.1 million were sent to
Texas cities, up 9.4 percent com-
pared to January 2004. Texas
counties received sales tax pay-
ments of $19.5 million, up 11.6
percent compared to last
January.
Another $9.3 million went to
89 special purpose taxing dis-
tricts around the state, up 17.3
percent compared to last
January. Nine local transit sys-
tems received $77 million in
sales tax allocations, up 4.6 per-
cent compared to a year ago.
December state sales tax col-
lections and January allocations
to local governments represent
sales that occurred in November.
San Patricio County sales tax
allocations continue to increase
with all but three cities showing
increased payments for the
month-to-date as well as the
year-to-date. The County is up
by 12.99 percent for a dollar
amount gain over January 2004
of $50,325.68.
