Owlets Split A Pair; 8th \Mns, 7th Loses
The Owlets split a pair of games
with Mathis here Thursday night,
\ with the 7th graders dropping a
tough 6-12 decision, but the 8th
graders .posting an impressive 28-16
win.
Mathis got on the board early in
both games. In the opener, a long
run, with 4 minutes gone, put the
Bucs ahead 6-0. The try for two fail-
ed.
The Owlets were unable to move
after the kickoff, and a bad snap and
partially blocked punt, gave Mathis
the ball on the Odem 19. A couple
running plays and it was first and
goal from the 6, but the Owlets came
up with a great goal line stand, and
> took over at their 6, the first quarter
ending a play later with Mathis
ahead 6-0.
Odem couldn’t move, and on
fourth down, another bad snap set
Mathis up in good shape at the Odem
6. The Owlet defense arose to the oc-
casion again, even overcoming a
penalty, to stop Mathis at the 1 foot
line. Two carries into the line moved
the ball to a first at the 10, then
quarterback Israel Mejias, kept the
ball, broke over tackle, got some
nice blocking downfield and went 90
yards for the counter, knotting the
score. The try for two failed and
three plays later, the first half ended
with a 6-6 score.
After the second half kickoff, the
Bucs moved to the 28, fumbled, with
Odem recovering. However, the
Owlets returned the favor, and
Mathis came up with the ball at the
28. A run netted 23, then a break
around end put another 6 on the
board for Mathis. The try was no
good, and it was 12-6 Mathis.
Odem couldn’t move, and the Bucs
took over on the Odem 24 after
another bobbled punt attempt, as the
final period began. Mathis picked up
a couple first downs, getting to the
Odem 6, with 56 seconds to play. A
hit into the line got 5, a keeper pick-
ed up a half-yard, but on the last
play of the game, the Owlet defense
came up with a defensive gem, drop-
ping the ball carrier on the 6 as the
whistle sounded.
It was a fast opener for the Owlet
8th graders, too, as on the second
play from scrimmage, after a 5 yard
penalty had put Mathis back to their
five, Havelka broke over the middle,

Cunningham rushed for 143 and 145 after three weeks
yards, respectively.
IN WEEK TWO of the district
campaign, three of the four match-
ups could qualify as the “game of
the week,” while all four contests
match teams that won last week
against teams that lost last week.
That puts a little extra pressure on
those teams that are 0-1 in district
play.
This week, Mathis hosts Taft, Sin-
ton visits Odem, Ingleside takes on
neighborhood rival Aransas Pass on
the road, and Rockport-Fulton
travels to West Oso.
ODEM HOSTS maroon and white
Pirates for the second consecutive
week, which makes it easy for
whoever makes their spirit posters.
That aside, the Owls were lucky to
win last week. They couldn’t get
their offense going until the fourth
quarter, but their defense — and one
big play — kept them in the contest.
Sinton has been susceptible to the
big play every week of the 1993
season, and it has cost them dearly.
Without the experience they have
enjoyed in the past, the Pirates must
capitalize on every opportunity. So
far this year, they haven’t...but
then, neither have the Owls.
THE MATHIS DEFENSE has
given up a lot of yardage this season,
but has generally been able to keep
their opposition out of the end zone
when it counted. Except last week,
when they lost for the first time.
The ’Hounds will come into Pirate
Stadium with an explosive offense
that finally detonated last week —
of sputtering.
However, their defense has not lived
up to traditional ’Hound standards.
The Pirate offense has shown
some explosion of its own in each of
the first four weeks of the season,
and that should make the ’Hound
defenders at least a little wary.
AP HAD A HOLIDAY last week
with West Oso. The holiday’s over.
Ingleside will come calling Friday
night with a vengence.
The rivalry between these two is
enough to inspire either team suffi-
ciently, but the Mustangs are still
smarting from their statistical
win/scoreboard loss to Rockport,
last week.
They would love to take their
revenge on the Panthers, who have
not really played well against a
strong or evenly-matched team yet
this season.
Both teams roll up a lot of yardage
and are equally comfortable running
or passing the pigskin. Check all the
lights on the scoreboard before this
one starts...it could be a dilly.
ROCKPORT-FULTON GOES to
West Oso, where the Bears are im-
proved, but unfortunately, not
enough to be much of a contender as
yet.
This may not be the week for the
Bears to win their first district game
in two years, but they could
sometime this season.
Meanwhile, the Pirates would like
to see all the underdogs win and be
the only team at 2-0 on Saturday
morning. It could happen...but it’s a
longshot.

shook loose several tacklers, and
raced 95 yards for the marker, with
7:21 to play in the period. The two
point conversion try failed, and the
board read 6-0 Mathis.
Apparently stung by the pro-
ceedings, Odem answered in a
hurry. With the ball at the Odem 34,
Joe Orozco broke around end, got
blocking, and romped 66 yards for
the marker. Eleazar Garza threw a
strike to Ralphie Pizana and the
Owlets were ahead 8-6 with 7:02 to
play in the first period.
After the kickoff, Mathis couldn’t
move it, punted, and Odem took over
on their 30. Orozco broke for 25 to the
Buc 45, then to the 30. On third down,
Garza connected with Rudy Dom-
inguez for a first at the 9 from where
Orozco went into paydirt and a 14-6
Odem lead. The try for two was no
good, and Odem led 14-6 at the
quarter.
Mathis bobbled the ball on the se-
cond play of the second period, with
Andrew Adamez coming up with the
ball at the Buc 19. Robby Burden,
Pizana and Orozco moved it to a first
at the 41; Garza hit Dominguez for a
first at the Mathis 40, a penalty cost
5, and a fumble gave Mathis the ball
at the Odem 45. The Bucs recovered
a couple of their own bobbles, moved
to a first at the 14, but on third down,
with 16 seconds on the clock, Mark
Flores intercepted on the 3 and the
half ended with the Owlets ahead 14-
6.
Joe Orozco took the second half
kickoff at the 15, broke tackles with
some hard running, and carried to
the Mathis 10. Burden went to the 3,
and Orozco wound it up with 6:53 on
the clock. Orozco passed to Pizana
for the two-pointer and it was 22-6
Odem.
A reverse handoff on the kickoff,
almost made it for Mathis, with the
ball going to the Odem 25. A 16 yard
carry by the Bucs’ Havelka put it on
the 9, first down. However, a couple
plays picked up only 8 yards, then
fine defensive work by Odem cost
Mathis 4, and a great defensive
stand gave Odem the ball at the 2.
Orozco gained a couple, but on se-
cond down, he was hit in the end
zone, and the Owlet lead was nar-
rowed to 22-8.
Mathis muffed the kickoff, Odem
took over at their 42, moved to a first
at the visitors’ 45, but a pass was in-
tercepted and Mathis was in
business at their 44 as the third
quarter ended.
On the first play of the final frame,
Mathis punched a big hole in the
Owlet line, and 56 yards later, with
7:46 to play, the board read 22-14
Odem, and with the successful two
pointer, it read 22-16.
Odem came back strong, taking
over an onside kick at the 45. Orozco
carried to a 1st at the Buc 36; Pizana
picked up a first at the 15, but
Mathis’s defense stifled a pair of
running plays, two passes failed to
connect, and the ball went over at
the 7.
Mathis picked up a first at the 17,
but a fumble, recovered by Burden
gave the Owlets good position at the
15. A penalty helped Odem, but a
loss brought it back to the 11. Orozco
circled end for that distance, and a
28-16 Odem lead with 2:24 to go.
The Bucs took to the air after the
kick, but an interception by Orozco
gave Odem the ball at the 35, return-
ing it to the 15. However, an Odem
fumble game the ball back to Mathis
at the 13. A run gained 18, a pass was
incomplete. Mathis moved to a 1st at
the Odem 47, then to the 31.
However, the clock put an end to the
Buc drive, and the Owlets had their
28-16 win.
The Owlets host Sinton Thursday
night, with a 5:30 whistle time.
