Annual Student Council Banquet

The annual Student Council
Banquet was held at McLean's
Cafe on Thursday evening, May
7, 1959. The banquet was at-
tended by both old and new
members of the 8tudent Coun-
cil. Mr. and Mra. David J. Wil-
liams and Mr. and Mrs. J. T.
Jones were also present.
After the meal, the new offi-
cers were Installed by Oene
Elliott, the out-going president.
They are as follows: John Bur-
dette, president; Robert Mc-
Kenzie, vice-president; Norma
Fay Duren, secretary-treasurer;
and Peggy Rowlett, reporter.
After the installation, Mr.
Jones presented the old mem-
ber* with Texas Association of
Student Council pins. This Is
the first time that the pins
have been available.
Members of the 1950 Student
Council are as follows:
Seniors: John Burdette, Nor-
ma Fay Duren.
Juniors: Peggy Rowlett, Lor-
etta Manual.
Sophomores: Pam Berry, Rob-

University Of Texas
The University of Texas College
of Arts and Sciences—the in-
stitution's largest—has 507 can-
didates for bachelor’s degrees at
June 6 Commencement.
More than 1.500 Main Uni-
versity students will receive de-
grees at the exercises at which
Dr. Alan T Waterman, Nation-
al Science Foundation director,
will be the commencement
speaker.

The Ooldthwatte Oarden club
met at the Jennie Trent Dew
Library Wednesday afternoon,
May 20, at 3 o’clock for the last
meeting of the year Hostesses
were Mmes. Luther Jernlgan'
Gerald Head, Walton Daniel
and W. p. Duren.
Mra. V. Z. Cornelius, presi-
dent, presided at the business
meeting and reports of the past
year’a work were given by the
different committee chairmen.
Mrs. John O. Berry gave a
report on the state meeting In
El Paso and the Therapy Work-
shop at Beaumont. Mrs. Berry
stated that the Ooldthwatte
Garden Club’s 8crapbook was
awarded aecond place In the
advanced division and the club
won third place on Yearbook.
The Oarden <Jlub gave 100% to
Mrs. M. T. Burnham
Presents Program At
Art And Civic Club
The Art and Civic Club met
In the home of Mrs Wallace
Johnson, Thursday, May 21. As
each member and guest arrived
they were served a lovely re-
freshment plate.
Mrs. M. T. Burnham present-
ed an Interesting program on
the "Location of Parks and
Forests of America.”
Following the program Mrs.
Milton 8chwarts presided at
the brief bustnesa meeting. She
expressed her appreciation to
the members of the club for
their cooperation during her
two years as president,
Mrs. Jack Elms gave a very
Impressive candlelight Installa-
tion ceremony for the officers
of the coming year Those In-
stalled were:
Mrs. W. Q Saylor, president;
Mrs. M F. Horton, vice-presi-
dent; Mrs, M. T. Burnham,
treasurer; Mrs. Dale Reid, rec-
ording aecretary; Mrs Lewis T.
Hudson, reporter; and Mrs Mil-
ton Schwartz, parliamentarian.
To conclude the program Mrs.
W. O. 8aylor briefly outlined
plans for the club next year.

Circle Meets May 25
Members of the Susanna
Wesley Circle of the First Meth-
odist Church met in the home
of Mrs. Harold Yarborough
Tuesday morning. May 25.
, Mrs. Loyd King presided and
Mra. Ed Bruce gave a program
on “Waste."
Refreshments were served at
the conclusion of the meeting
by the hostess to the following
members: Mmes. Paul Tlschler,
Malcolm Jernlgan, A. J. Tully,
Alton Keeler, Loyd King. Mil-
ton Schwarts, Ward Cady.
Jesse Moreland. Talbot Ledbet-
ter, T. C. Oraves. Ed Bruce. Y.

Thurman Head, and one new
member, Mrs. Thomas Earl

8chool No. Ill, held at Brown-
wood: Mrs. Malcolm Jernlgan,
Chairman of Yearbook Com-
mittee, which won third place
at the state meeting; Mrs. T. J.
Collier for her assistance In
grading yearbooks; Mmes. R.
Olynn Raley. Lee Tabor, Mal-
colm Jernlgan, Fred Stephens,
and Miss Abble Ervin for out-
standing service rendered and
perfect attendance.
Mrs. Duren announced that
Mrs. Robert Butler’s yard was
Judged the ’’Yard of the Montiy
and she was awarded a collec-
tion of named Irises from the
yard of Mrs. V. Z. Cornelius and
the Yard of the Month Marker
was placed In her yard.
The resignation of Mrs. Fred
Reynolds and Mrs. Harold Yar-
borough were accepted with re-
grets.
Mrs. Howard Trent was elect-
ed to membership In the club.

their parents on their 50th
wedding anniversary.
The youngest grandson. Owen
Bascomb opened the door and
Messrs W G. and Harold Yar-
borough welcomed the guests.
Receiving with Mr. snd Mrs.
Yarborough were the two
friends who were attendants at
the wedding fifty years ago:
Mrs John C. Hicks of Fort
Worth, who was then Miss Lola
Humphries. , and Mr. Edward
Oeeslln of Brady.
Mrs. Yarborough was lovely
In blue lace over taffeta with
a pink carnation corsage.
Miss Linda Yarborough, a
granddaughter and Mrs. Ben
Yarborough of Santa Anna reg-
istered the guests
Displayed on the register
table were the bride and groom
figurines used on the cake at
the golden wedding of Mrs.
Yarborough* parent*. Mr. and
Mrs. J. C. Mullan In 1937.
The house was a bower of
beauty with many arrange-
ment* of gladioli and yellow
rosebuds and potted gold mums.
The tea table was laid with
a handsome Italian cut work
linen cloth centered with a
beautiful three tiered wedding
cake decorated In roeebuds and
illy of the valley topped with
a filigree figure "SO.”
Mrs. Joe Palmer served cake
the first hour and Mr*. Le*
Walton the aecond hour Mrs.
