How Go*. Colquit can stand
before px-Confeilpralc soldiers
■ml for their suffrage and
the suffrage of their family rela-
tions is an inigma. When lie
was st.aU> senator|he voUh! against
the submission of un amendment
providing |xmsions for the old
soldiers. As soon as he became
governor he summarily ousted
an old soldier from the office of
commissioner of i>ensions and
put in hi* stead a young man
wholly unacquainted with the
business and who was not an ap-
plicant for the place. The chiv-
alry of the men who wore the
grey as well as they who wore
the blue revolt at this indignity
to the men who I fought through
the civil war.
It hss been eeclared that bark
of Governor Colquitt are the
railroads the political ring
lumber and liquor and there is
none who can truthfully deny
the allegation. Not only are
these interests now dominant inI
the government of Texas but]
though them every selfish inter-
est is having an influence which
is militating against tin; best
interrsts of the people in this|
State.
Tolerant at all times but with-
out compromise Judge Wm. F.
Ramsey in eiscussing the pross-
ing questiou of the hour in Tex
as with a directness in his cam-
paign for Governor that is con-
vincing and with an earnestness
and vigor that shows he is deep-
ly impressed with the vital need |
of succoring Texas from the rule
of the special interests which
now dominate the State.
The nation-wide monument to
erect a Titanic Memorial Archl
at the National capital has been
started by the women of this
country. No one is to contri-
bute but women who are asked
for one dollar to this grand
cause which is to typify the
tribute of women to heroic wom-
anhood in that tfreat world's
disaster the sinking of the Ti-
tantic.
The results of the Colquitt ad-
ministration show this predic-
tion is justified. The special
interests have been doubly anx-
ious that no laws to protect the
State be passed and where it
has been possible the Governor
has seen that no such laws have
been passed.
"If you are after legislative
peace and rest don't count on
me" declares Judge Ramsey.
"Legislative rest means legis-
lative rust" Governor Ramsey
has also declared that "legisla-
tive rest" means "there is a hen
on don't bother her."
Judge Ramsey's addresses
are notable ones of aftiunation.
In none arc there expressions of
what he hopes to do but ever
and again the ringing "I will
if elected Governor" is given
utterance.
A city without a commercial
organization might just as well
be without a newsi>aper. Both
make for progress and the up-
build'ng of the community.
The Texas Press Association
have closed a very successful
convention held at Temple.
San Antonio was chosen for
1913.

was invented to shield the liquor

the country as the wisdom of
statesmen whereas it was de
signad to stop further restrict
ive legislation against saloons
As a consequence it h is sent a
paralyzing influence into the
ranks of money men i:i the east
and they are now more afraid of
Texas than ever. The piney-
woods section of Texas would
have been a wilderness today
but for the encourage.nent our

Ramsey's slogan for progress in
Texas hits the Icey note to pros
perity over the State.
The declaration for laws to
encourage the building of rail-
roads under proper conditions
to make possible the further de-
velopment of irrigation to pass
laws to conserve the natural re-
sources of the State and to throw
the proper protection around the
farmers that they may get just
returns for their toil Judge
Ramsey is advocating legislation
which this State stands badly in
need of. To accomplish this
there must be a change of Gov-
ernors and realizing this the
people in all sections seem in-
clined to turn Governor Colquitt
out and put Judge Ramsey in.
In all of its intervecine strug-
gles and warintr factions Mexico
has never developed a true pat-
riot or even a distinguished sol-
dier or commander of an army
rhe sensitive nature of the Mex-
can and his selfish character will
iver bar him from the attainment
jf any distinguished attributes
especially in military achieve-
ments. His aspirations are com-
mendable. but he is too tickle to
make good with a disposition to
ride hobbys and serve rival mas-
ters—to promote his individual
fortune regardless of his coun-
try's peril
Discussing the needs of Texas
in general Judge Ramsey lias
declared in his addresses that
Texas can accomplish nothing
by a policy of legislative paraly-
sis and governmental inactivity.
The State said Judge Ramsey
is largely undeveloped the re
sources practically untouched
and thas it is a duty resting on
all statesmen andupon the state-
manship of Texas to devise wise
aud efficient measures to aid in
the great work of developement.

It is a significant fact that

It is in bringing money into the
State from the outside that 9ur in-

Dr. Rankin Puts it Plain.
When a saloon candidate is
speaking and saying 'prohibition
is not an issue in this campaign
look behind him and you will
find all saloon keepers and their
politicians lined up saying Auien
Of course prohibition is an im-
pertinent issue with them but
saloons are always an imperti-
nent issue. Either a prohibi-
tionist or an anti-prohibitionist
will be elected to every office in
Texas this year. Saloon keep-
ers want their men in and pro-
hibitionists want their men in.
That joins the issue—saloon or
no saloon—hard and fast. Gov-
ernon Colquitt and Jake Wolters
are not of the neuter gentler no
matter what their claims may be.

two masked bandits who held up
the New Orleans Northeastern
train near Hattisburg are said to
have made the richest haul in
train robbing history. One
package was said to contain $140-

The Battle Won
The prohibition tight that has
been on in Howie county for the
past few weeks came to a close
last Saturday when all the re-
turns were in and it was found
that the pros had won by a ma-
jority of 233. The tight was a
hard one and almost as many
votes were cast as poll tax issu-
ed in the county. The victory
is no doubt the choice of the peo-
ple any how it behovers every
citizen in the county to see that
the law is enforced.
A citizen who wilfully violates
the prohibition law is a criminal
to the same extent as the man
violating any other law on the
statute books. Any person
knowing the prohibition law to
be violated and not assisting to
enforce same is a party to the
crime in somuch that he is not
assisting in enforcing the law.
A man who wilfully violates a
law does it for and a man who
shields such a person never
knows when he will fall a victim
of the ring who acquire gain by
violating the laws of the country
