DeWitt News Briefs
Unemployment rate drops
The latest unemployment rate for DeWitt County indicates a slight
drop from August according to the Texas Employment Commission.
The rate for September was 6.4% unemployed compared with the
previous month’s rate of 6.7%. That represented a labor force of 8,612
with 8,065 employed and 547 unemployed.
In comparison the rate in Victoria was 5.7%; Goliad. 4 9%; Gon-
zales. 5.5%; Karnes, 5.6% and Lavaca, 2.5%.
November for clean-up
The City of Cuero has proclaimed November as Clean-Up Month
for residents.
Throughout the month residential customers of the city garbage serv-
ice may use the landfill free by presenting a paid city utility bill.
The landfill is open Monday through Friday from 9 a m to 4 p.m.
The free service docs not apply to commercial customers.
French Halloween Carnival
The John C. French PTO Halloween Carnival will be from 4:30 to
6:30 p m. today, Saturday, at the school playground. In case of bad
weather it will be held at the Cuero Municipal Clubhouse at the City
Park.
A costume parade is planned for 4:30 therefore children arc en-
couraged to wear Halloween costumes. Other activities include a
softball throw , concession stand, bowling, spin art, ring toss, fish pond,
face painting and murh more.
Parents will help set up the carnival starting at 9 a m and volunteers
are needed for clean-up afterwards.
St. Michael’s Carnival
St. Michael’s Halloween Carnival will be Sunday. Oct. 29, from 4 to
8 p.m. at St Michael’s Hall
Chili, hot dogs, Into pie, desserts and drinks will be served A
variety of games will include cake walk, fish pond, ping pong fish, has
I! ketball throw, dunking booth, bean bag throw, face painting, silhouette
I; drawing and pumpkin pond The eighth grade will have a haunted
11 house.
There will also be an auction with over 20 items for sale. Drawings
will also be held to give away 15 additional items.
October Fun Fest
T he Nordheim Pirate Band and Band Boosters will sponsor an Oc-
tober Fun Fest Sunday. Oct. 29, at the Nordheim Shooting Club Hall.
A turkey dinner will be served from 11:30 a m. to 1:30 p.m. It will
include turkey, dressing, cranberries, green beans, com, rolls, tea or
coffee ami peach cobbler Adult tickets are S3.75 and a child’s ticket is
$2.25.
The band will give a mini-concert beginning at 1:30 p.m and games
will start at 2 p.m
Westhoff Halloween Carnival
The Westhoff School Community Halloween Carnival is scheduled
for Tuesday, OcL 31, at the school stalling at 5 p.m.
Events include country store, prizes, toy and cake walk, apple Nib-
bing, fish pond, grab hag, auction and dunking booth.
The menus include beef stew prepared by Wilburn Arndt, hot dogs,
chili dogs, bumtos, com dogs, NX tamales, pie and cake.

Soil Conservation District
Landowners select
Braden for post
Bill Braden of Cuero was recent-
ly re-elected to the DeWitt County
Soil and Water Conservation Dis
tnct Board of Directors to represent
Zone V of the district.
The purpose of the DeWitt
County SWCD, with headquarters
in Cuero is to promote sound soil
and water conservation programs
on farm and ranch lands within the
district and to serve as a voice for
farmers and ranchers on conserva-
tion matters.
The Nurd of directors coor-
dinates the conservation efforts of
various kxal, suite and federal
agencies and other organizations
and has auUiority to enter into
working agreements with these
governmental agencies and private
concerns to cany out its purposes.
As one of five individuals serv-
ing on the distnet Niard of direc-
tors. Braden will be responsible for
district policies and procedures for
carrying out the district program
within the framework of the Texas
soil conservation district law.
In other areas of leadership,
Braden is active in Young Farmers.
DeWitt County Producers Coop ,
and Pecan Association, eel. He is
married to the former Terry Means
and they have two children

Dr. Don SlcbNns, Texas A&M
Extension Community Develop-
ment Specialist, will speak on small
town economics at the Cuero Lions
Club meeting noon Wednesday at
the American Legion Hall.
Because of the importance of his
topic to the local economy, com-
munity leaders and organizations
have been invited to attend the ses-
sion.
Dr. Slcbbins will present infor-
mation on how communities facing
a depressed economy can use its lo-
cal resources to rebound.
With 14 years experience as an
economic development
specialist.Dr. Slcbbins explains
how important retailing and shop-
ping at home is to the local
economy.
"Many times people think about
bnnging money into town," he said,
"but what we have to do is keep it
in town."
"Cuero merchants should not N'
pessimistic.” he continued, "be-
cause they know their customers
better than anyone else Big town
merchants don’t know your cus-
tomers."
Speaking to community leaders
and businessmen throughout the
state, he points out how citizens
can help revive their town ami
overcome depressed economies.
