THE STORY OF TOM BROWN'S FIRST YEAR IN COLLEGE
"Well, Tom, what are you going to do about it."
"James, I hardly know what to do," was the slow response.
" What would you do if you were in my place?"
"I would go," was James' quick answer," "I think it would
be a fine trip for you," continued James," then you need to
learn what it means to be off by yourself anyway."
This was the conversation heard between Tom Brown and
James Willis a few weeks after the opening of school last Sep-
tember.
This was Tomni's first year in college, and the first time he
had been away from home for more than a week at a time in
his life. Though he was now eighteen years old he felt as we
all did when we left home. But, Tom, having been reared to
like school and training had been inspired in his earlier days
to go to college, so there was no way for his parents to do but
to let him go.
However ready and willing Tom Brown was to get off to
school there were some obstacles in his way.
The thought of never being away from home before was
the first thing that entered his mind. But he thought to him-
self, "I cannot let such as this bother me for I would never
get an education here." This being dismissed from his mind
the next question was, "IIow am I to get the means to go on?"
