When Marjorie's train pulled into- -Station Ethel
was there to meet it. They were soon bouncing over the
road toward the ranch in the Warren's big blue roadster.
On the way Ethel frequently pointed out certain hills, val-
leys, outstanding rocks, of interest because of their con-
nection with her life as a ranchman's daughter. Here was a
hill where she loved to sit on her pony and\ watch those
sunsets. Yonder was a valley where she had caused a
stampede among the cattle".
"But where were you when Jack overtook the ban-
dftts? "inquired Marjorie.
Ethel's face was a puzzle. "What bandits," she quer-
ied.
And there, gentle reader, Jack's throne of heroism be-
gan to totter. Ethel listened with a mischeivous twinkle in
her eye while her friend recounted the tales as Jack had
told them on that memorable night of the reception.
"-And my dear, you believed all that", she exclaim-
ed petulantly.
"Yes, why shouldn't I? They were no worse than the
ones we hear regularly at home-only more interesting."
"They're told out here too, but for the movies," said
Ethel.
"Do you mean to tell me that you were not captured
by bandits? That those were just yarns made to order?"
"Why of course, Marjie, such fellows as "Two-Gun-
Pete" had their day long before mine came."
Marjorie was hurt, perplexed and yet amused. To
think that all those "Wonderful stories" were just so much
Eastern atmosphere chopped up by a Westerner's tongue!
How ridiculous! She must avenge herself and her guests
in some way or other.
