The Volunteer Fire Depart-
ment ot Snyder, met last Satur-
day night by order of the Chief.
Owing to there having been
several other attractions in the
city the meeting was not attend-
ed as well as it should have
been.
Mr. Joe Strayhorn related
about having been entertained
while East by the Denton Fire
Department. Mr. Strayhorn
spoke at length about the equip,
u.ent of the Denton Department
of which J. W. Massey, of Sny-
der, was at one time Chief.
We then had several good
suggestions by Mayor Taylor
in regard to the beat means of
securing equipment for the de-
partment. A committee was
then appointed to wait upon the
City Council at its next regu-
lar meeting to confer with them
in regard to just what was
needed in order that they might
make their first step in prepar-
ation for the protection of prop-
erty, and to request the Council
in the name of the Department
and all good citizens to pur-
chase such equipment. Said ex-
penditures to be just as light as
possible, and yet get something
that will be of permanent use to
the Company a~d enable them
to give the citizens of Snyder
some protection in case of tire
instead of being compelled t->
stand back and see the mighty
demon destroy life and property.
Every one is cordially invited
to attend the next meeting of
the tire department to be held
May 6th. at the courthouse at
8:30 p. m. Now gentlemen, it is
up to you, every man in the
town of Snyder should show
his citizenship by attending that
meeting, and show by his
presence tha he is in favor of
this great cause for the common
good. Let all of us pull to-gath-
er and we will have a fire de-
partment that we can point to
with pride and one that will
afford us the pleasure of
knowiug that if fire breaks out,
as we know that it will, we will
have some protection at least,
Fire has visited several neigh-
boring towns and we can not
expect it to miss us all the time,
and the first real fire that we
have and we have a department
with equipments to fight it with,
we will be reoaid mantimes
over for all we have expended
and all that we have done. While
on the other hand, if we go on
in this slipshod manner and say
a department is all right, but do
not put our shoulders to the
wheel in helping to get this
protection we will live to regret
it many times over. Now we
have a thoroughly organized fire-
Fire department with a chicf>
that understands lire fighting,
and the training of men to be
proficient in this lire. But we
:iave nothing to fight with or
to train tne men in preparation
of doing so. Truly it is up to us.
What are we going to do about
it? are we going to stand back
and let this organization die out
or the want of a few naltrv dol-
lars. Are we going to rally
together like business men and
citizens and give our boys such \
equipments as they need for the !
protection of our lives and prop-1
erty. It will be known at ouri
next meeting just what the City
Council is going to do in this
matter, so let us all attend the
meeting and help this good cause
along,
ing and discussed fire appli-
ances such as is desired by the
department and would be appro- j
priate for Snyder conditions and j
requested committee of the de*
of Snyder to be present at the
next meeting of the fire depart-
ment to be held at the opera
bouse May the ‘ tli, to get an
expression from the Snyder peo-
ple in regard to just what they
wanted. And for the commit'ahm
to futher ge; prices and terms 1
on such equipment as desired 1
by the department, and they
would take permanent action on
the question at their next meet-
ing May 13th. Every man that
is interested in the future of
Snyder should lie present at the
opera house May 6th, H:3o P. M
