ZAVALA COUNTY SENTINEL, CRYSTAL CITY, TEXAS, JANUARY 14, 1944
AN ENGINE THAT LOOKS LIKE A TRAIN—On Its maiden trip this new 5400 horsepower Diesel Electric
locomotive of the Missouri Pacific Lines hauled 123 loaded tank cars from Texarkana, Tex., to Dupo, 111., a
distance of 515 miles in 18 hours and 35 minutes. Admiringly dubbed "the big Jeep" by railroaders, the new
locomotive Is 190 feet long and consists of four separa'e units, each almost as long as a box car. Each unit
contains a 1350 horsepower Diesel electric motor. Both end units are Identical and the locomotive can be
operated as one unit from either, so that turntable operations at the end of a run are not necessary. Four
of these giants of the rails have been ordered by the Missouri Pacific and delivery of the second one is
expected in a few weeks.
TREASON
Giving comfort to the enemy is
treason. •
Not long ago I met a stranger; he
leemed to be well fed, clothed and to
all outward appearance he gave evi-
dence that he was well-to-do and
was enjoying the current prosperity.
Our conversation was about the
war and the present successes of the
Allies.
The stranger said: “This is old
Roosevelt’s war and I don’t take
much stock in it. Roosevelt is just
like old Wilson and the suckers who
followed him in World War 1. I am
lick and tired of Roosevelt and his
new deal. The sooner the Republi-
cans put Roosevelt and his new deal
out the better it will suit me.'
I said, “Mister, do you expect me
to join you in denouncing Roosevelt
and Wilson? Do you expect me to
join you in giving comfort to Hitler
and his infernal gang of cutthroats
by criticising and speaking evil of
the best men and the greatest states
men the world has ever produced?
“Don’t you know that when you
speak evil of any good, patrotic
American that you are doing service
to Hitler with as much effect as if
you were on his firing line with a
rifle in your hands?
‘.When Hitler hears of Americans
speaking evil of Roosevelt, our able
Commander-in-Chief of the armed
forces of these United States, it gives
him comfort and the hone that
Americans are divided among them-
selves and makes him put forth
greater effort to prolong the war.
“Your tirade against the President
and the great Woodrow Wilson indi-
cates that a Hitler load has been
picked into you and that you are a
darned ignoramus, or yellow to the
bone.
“If you must express hostile senti-
ments against Roosevelt and the
dead Wilson, I would advise you to
take the first plane out for Germany
and do your talking there where
your rotten sentiments will shine
and be appreciated. No true Ameri-
can on this side of the Atlantic likes
to hear such treasonable rot. Let me
say that you are lucky to get this
far with your nose in place
“Now, Mister, move on and keep
your flannel mouth closed while you
are in this town, lest you get into
an argument with some of the kins-
men of the boys who are over yon-
der fighting for freedom which you
have not the gratitude to appre-
ciate.—Uncle Bill, in Sterling City

Guess that poor vacuum cleaner has a right
to gripe and he probably has many brother
and sister electrical appliances in the same
shape—we hope none of them belong to you.
Your appliances nowadays need to be given
the care you would ordinarily bestow upon
your best heirloom china. They’re not so
fragile, but they’re mighty precious, now that
they probably can’t be replaced. By attending
to them regularly, those electrical appliances
can save you much more time and energy and
by giving them a little extra care you can keep
’em running for the duration.
GENERAL POINTERS ON CARE OF ALL APPLIANCES
«
i. Handle your electrical appliances with care; treat 'em like a baby. 2. Prolong
the life of your appliances by repairing them promptly. 3. Keep your appliances
clean with a soft brush or cloth on electrical parts—never use water. 4. Don't
kink or knot cords, and pull them out by grasping plug, not wire. 5. Oil
according to manufacturer's instructions.
