Dear Editor:
It has become very apparent
over the last few months that
Cuero seems to have a lack of
concern for its disadvantaged cit-
izens. I am appalled at the lack
of response on the issues of
transportation in Cuero and sur-
rounding areas. Visiting several
courthouses and city halls
around this part of Texas, it
seems that there is a competition
to see which town can out do its
counterparts in restoring old
relics. It seems that there is
more concern about these
restorations than this problem at
hand. It is understandable that
there is grant money available
for all the projects mentioned
above, but who is seeking grants
and monies for the serious prob-
lems that are arising today?
There are citizens of Cuero
and surrounding areas that are
in dire need of life sustaining
dialysis treatments and are
unable to utilize the current
transportation system to access
this care. The City of Cuero
reports that there is no funding
for transportation at this time,
and don’t foresee funding for the
future.
This places the citizens of
Cuero at the sole mercy of the
Golden Crescent Planning
Commission to dictate when and
where they can receive health-
care services. It is not a guaran-
tee that rural transit will provide
transportation to and from a doc-
tor’s or clinic appointments. It is
on a first come first serve basis
which is dictated by this commis-
sion. Hemodialysis treatments
wait for no one, without dialysis
three times per week a patient
can suffer serious consequences
and even death.
Cuero’s tax paying citizens
need to speak out and demand
equality and guaranteed mobili-
ty within the county and sur-
rounding areas. The elderly and
economically challenged are at a
greater risk for health problems
without the added burden of the'
inability to access the care
required, Cuero is very fortunate
to have a great community hos-
pital, advanced healthcare ser-

vices and specialty physicians,
however, Cuero needs to ensure
that every community member
not only have these services
available, but are accessible.
For those upwardly mobile
citizens of Cuero who take their
automobiles for granted, just
imagine a planning committee
dictating what doctor or clinic
you will be able to utilize. If you
are a citizen of Goliad, for exam-
ple, and rely solely on the ural
transit system, your only option
to dialysis and hospital care is in
Victoria, Texas. The dialysis
facility in Victoria is reported at
capacity where will the dialysis
patients go? There is not one, but
two dialysis facilities in Cuero
waiting for patients to access the
available care, how will the
patients come that are chal-
lenged by their lack of trans-
portation?
Bring patients to Cuero for
dialysis treatments not only
brings business to the facility,
but brings business to local
restaurants, stores, gas stations,
and a multitude of other service
providers. Transportation in and
around Cuero is a problem that
needs to be addressed.
Thank-you in advance for
allowing a small voice into your
community.

Dear Editor:
On Feb. 7, 2005, most
Americans had earned enough
money to pay for their food sup-
ply for the entire year. In recog-
nition of this date, the Farm
Bureau celebrates Food Check-
Out Day. This year the DeWitt
County Farm Bureau held a
Farmers Share Breakfast and
collected food and other dona-
tions from patrons to donate to
the local food bank CAMAL
House. These donations totaled
82 lbs of food and $310.68 in cash
donations. We, The ^ DeWitt
County Farm Bureau, would like
to thank each and every patron
who donated to this cause. This
was a huge success with your
help. Again, many thanks.
