Subject to the action of the nominating
convention—should one be held.
A New Daily.
The Fort Worth Democrat has cele-
brated the glorious Fourth by coming
out as a neat, sprightly daily. This ev-
idence ol progress we welcome, and we
call upon the public spirited citizens of
that place to see to it that the enter-
prise does not fail.—Commercial.
“Fail77 is not in our vocabula-
ry. Nothing fails in Fort
Worth, when it is backed by
the proper energy and industry.
Our people let nothing fail that
redounds to their interest.
Democratic Congressional Con-
vention.
We publish in another column
the call of the chairman of the
Democratic Congressional Ex-
ecutive Committee of the Third
Congressional District, for a
convention to meet at Dallas ou
the 30th day of August next,
for the purpose ol nominating a
candidate to represent, this dis-
trict in Congress. The district
is composed of the counties of
Clay, Collin, Cooke, Dallas,
Denton, Ellis, Eastland, Erath,
Grayson, Hill, Hood, Jack,
Johnson, Kaufman, Montague,
Palo Pinto, Parker, Rockwall,
Tarrant, Wise and Young/ The

Committees should call couuty
conventions at once for the pur-
pose of selecting delegates to
the district convention. We
hope there may be a full attend*
ance, and a good delegation se-
lected.
Some one is poisoning the
dogs in Sherman. Thus far
the local 6f the Register has es-
caped.
A serious cutting affray oc
curred at Grapeland, in Houston
county, on the 7th mst., in which
H. R. Jordon infliched severe,
if not mortal wounds, on J. C.
Herman.
The force at work on th£
Trans-Continental have been
.*
pushing things this week. At
present writing they have ten
miles of track laid beyond Blos-
som Prairie, and seventeen
miles westward from Texarkana
—Leaving a gap of only fifty-
four miles to be completed.
The track from this end will be
likely to reach Clarksville next
week.—Bonliam News, 7th.
The Fort Worth Democrat
says the air is filled with the
din of axe, hammer and saw,
and mechanics are hard to find
who have leisure to do small
jobs for their best patrons. .We
judge Fort Worth resembles to
some extent Denison in the fall
of 772, when the sound of the
hammer and saw was heard on
all hands, night as well as day,
Sundays not excepted.—Denison
News.
Twelve persons were baptized
uear Denison, on the 9th inst.
The Directors of the Agricul-
tural College, at Bryan, are
called to meet at Austin on the
15th inst.
Bryan has organized a Tilden
and Hendricks club, and ratified
the St. Louis nominations most
enthusiastically.
An cld man named Robinson,
killed himself on Monday last,
by taking an over dose of opi-
um. He had been living in the
city some time, working at his
trade, that of mattress maker.
A short time ago he received his
medal for services during the
war with Mexico, and had also
gotten his pass to the Centenni-
al. We have been so far unable
to learn anything of his family.
—Corsicapa Observer.
A young woman, living in the
family of Mr. Frazier, attempt-
ed to take her own life by taking
arsenic, on Tuesday last. Dr.
i
Calder was called in and succeed-
ed in saving her life. She did
her best to prevent the Doctor
from relieving her. No cause is
knowrn why she Should be tired
of life.—Corsicana Observer.
L. Willits. a cabinet maker of
Denison, was arrested on the
6th inst. for committing a name-
less outrage on his little step-
daughter, a girl nine years of
age.
■—The robbery of the train od'
the Missouri Pacific Railroad,
arid the successful escape ot the
robbers, with nearly seveuty
thousand dollars in currency, as
a reward of their daring, is an-
other demonstration of the la-
mentable fact that the govern-
ment is either incapable of pro-
tecting itizens, or is criminally
indifferent to them. In no oth-
er country on earth could such
freebooters as the James and
Younger brothers prosecute
their villainies in such a high-
handed manner, and escape de-
tection, capture, and punish
ment. The many daring exploits
on the road, by these modern
Dick Turpins and Jack Shep-
ards, have aroused the astonish-
ment of every one acquainted
with their daring, deeds, and
awakened the righteous indigna-
tion of the people, because they
are not apprehended and pun-
ished. It reflects discredit
upon a government of the
boasted power and strength
of our Republic,'.that, iu the one
hundredth year of its founda-
tion, a handful of daring spirits,
who have not the fear of God or
man before their eyes, should
continue to violate the laws and
escape punishment.
