and penalized them five yards
instead. Suddenly, Billy Lauf-
man, Cyrus Adler’s dependa-
ble halfback, turning a sudden
shade of blue, rushed up to the
official and shoved a determ-
ined jaw up to his. As a hand-
ful of quick acting C .A. grid-
sters jumped in to prevent what
looked like a touchy situation
and the entire AZA team stared
on in utter amazement, Lauf-
man contributed the classic un-
derstatement of all times, “I
beg to diffdr with you, sir.” Un
quote.

The Jewish Community Cen-
ter All-Stars, paced by Sid Na-
chlas’ 8 points and 6 by Max
Marks, dropped its opening
moment, a cage campaign that
is fast getting on in age, finds
its pennant race due for a fur-
ther thinning out in games this
coming Monday. More and
more indications are rapidly
being turned in that the league
will have a raft of outstanding
hoopsters, on the basis of open-
ing nite games and those of the
past week. Already there a num
ber of contenders for Most Val-
uable Player honors, and a for-
est of all-league timber. Izzy
Shapiro and Billy Laufman
looked great for Cyrus Adler
“A”, while the surprising Un-
knowns may possess the lea-
gue’s top eager in graceful Les-
lie Greenfield, and other fine
perfornjer in Abe Kobb. AZA
“A” came up with a splendid
trio in Herb Lackshin, Bob
Samuels, and Joey Cohen, while
S. A. R.’s Mendel Laviage im-
pressed everyone.
Here now is a late flash from
the headquarters of the M. M.
Copian basketball tournament,
held two^ Sundays ago: Morris
Backer of A. and M. Hillel; Ir-
ving Wishnow of Masada; Ben-
net Kalmans of M. M. Copians;
Maurice Dubinski also of M. M.
Copians; Irving Suhl of the A.
J. No. 2; Billy Laufman of Cy-
rus Adler; and BBYM’s Burt
Gaylin earned berths on the
Rogue Society All-Opponent
Team. Rogue Society of course,
received the championship tro-
phy and individual medals for
winning the tourney, and addi-
tional trophies went to AZA
136 for sportsmanship, to M.
M. Copians for runner-up hon-
ors, and to Cyrus Adler for the
consolation championship.

Middy Grounds Upsets
Week-End Grid Games
The hard rain that fell Sat-
urday left Lubbock field under
a lake of water with mud to
spare, and as a result the Jun-
ior and Senior grid finals were
postponed until this Sunday,
December 11 — Weather per-
mitting.
With only Masada and Ro-
gues Society having any chan-
ces for the title in the Senior
division and Cyrus Adler and
AZA 136 “A” teams in the Jun-
ior, all other games have been
cancelled. The 9:30 opener pits
the two midget clubs in anoth-
er expected grudge duel The
two teams fought to a 12-12
deadlock three weeks ago. A vie
tory for C. A. will sew up the
crown, while AZA must con-
quer its foes for the lead and
meet S. A. R. later in a makeup
affair. At this writing C. A.
holds a half game lead, having
played and won one more game
than AZA. A Cy Adler tri-
umph will settle all disputes.
The 11 o’clock engagement
features plenty of excitement
as undefeated and untied Ma-
sada takes on the Rogues. Ma-
sada can clinch he title for the
second year in a row with at
least a tie, while the Rogues
can throw the loop into a dead-
lock with a victory. At any rate,
football followers are promised
to see flying ovals sailing in an
expected aerial circus. Maybe

Changing the scene to John-
ston field, where the young Ex-
tension League operates, its

games postponed last week will
be made up at the conclusion
of the season.
