SECULARISM AND ZIONISM
The recent declaration against Zionism by some
ninety Reform rabbis (most of them retired, super-
annuated or not holding pulpits), largely on the
ground that it is "secularizing” Jewish life in
America is more amusing than exciting. The
(Uliviiwa aw uivtv *,,***f> ■■ p - ----
toremost lay anti-Zionists in the United States are
men who are never seen by these same rabbis ex-
cept, occasionally, at high holiday services or, more
usually, when sonorous eulogies are sounded at
funerals. It is the Zionists who are the backbone
of the demand in all communities for Jewish edu-
cation; it is the Zionists who are found usually in
the Conservative and Orthodox synagogues, cer-
tainly more traditional in their Judaism than the
Reform temples; it is the Zionists whose whole phil-
osophy arises out of a desire to realize the Biblical
prophecies. The self-righteous strain of these ninety
rabbis is the more noteworthy when it is recalled
that they form less than 5 per cent of the total rab-
binate in America. Isn’t it just too bad tint all
those other rabbis, 95 per cent, are so terribly
irreligious and secular — since they espouse the
Zionist cause?

LAUGHTER WILL RING AGAIN
In all of the Hitler propaganda there is a kernel
of truth which is so twisted and perverted that
it becomes the carrier of a deadly poison. As in
previous speeches Hitler did not omit his usual
reference to the Jewish people as the instigators
of the present war as he opened the winter relief
campaign. But this time he added a new approach
which should stir American Jewry out of its lethargy
and make it re-examine carefully its special re-
sponsibility in the present struggle.
Hitler said: “Jews laughed in Germany when
I prophesied somethin", I don’t know if they
bugh still, or if they have already forgotten to
bugh. But 1 can assure them they will forget to
bugh everywhere.” It is true that the Jews in
Germany bughed at Hitler when he first an-
nounced his anti-Semitic program. If is true
that the Jews in Germany bugh no more, and
that the Jews in Poland, in Austria, in Belgium,
m HoUand, and in France have forgotten how to
bugh. Hitler has seen to that. Even the child-
ren no longer know laughter. Tears and death are
supreme everywhere where the Nazi armies have
planted their banners, bloodied by the crimes of
murder and torture against innocent victims.
But here in our free land and the lands of
freedom joined together under the banner of the
United Nations the capacity to bugh has not been
destroyed. You’re right again, Mr. Hitler, that
there is-little bughter now and, frankly, we should
like to see even less of it. We should like to see
a grim mood of earnestness, a grim resolve that we
shall not bugh again until you and your organized
butchery are torn up by the roots. Make no mistake
Mr. Hitler, the world will be free to laugh again
very soon. The day of your ominous prophesies
and your grand boasts is over. You have made
many prophesies that were right. But in the past
year you have made as many others that now stick
in your throat and choke off your thunderous
threats and challenges. The Jews will laugh
again too some day. They will not bugh at your
complete defeat or at the victory of the democracies.
Those are far too serious matters for bughter.
It will take years before the sorrows which you
hare sown have been banished. But that hour
wiH come and then the welkin will ring with the
bughter of men unafraid and free. This is not
merely a prophecy. It is a certainty.

WHAT PEOPLE THINK
Not so many weeks ago an important research
organization—not Jewish—conducted a nationwide
poll on the question whether the Jewish people in
the United States “have too much influence in the
business world, not enough influence or about the
amount of influence they should have” . . . Ex-
cept to Jews who think ignoring answers solves
problems, the replies are remarkable: 51% polled
said “too much influence,” 2% “not enough,” 33%
“amount they should have” and 14% had “no
opinion” . . . 62% of the men thought the Jews
had “too much influence” while only 57% of the
women answered “too much.” . . . Contrary to ex-
pectations the lowest ratio among residential groups
which answered “too much” was recorded on the
farms. In towns under 2,500 the percentage was
57 and 49 in towns over 500,000 ... The area which
produced the Ku Klux Klan had the lowest percent-
age answering the Jews had “too much influence.”
The South’s ratio was 43%, while the Far West
had 57% and the Northeast 52.
Those are good statistics on which our vaunted
educational agencies, not least the Office of War
Information, might want to get to work.
SUCCESSOR TO FORD
The orchestra which, for nyny years, was iden-
tified with the name of Henry Ford because he
sponsored its Sunday night concerts, will now,
appropriately enough, return to the air under the
auspices of a Jew . . . He is the enterprising
gentleman who owns Sam’s Cut-Rate, Inc., in the
city of Detroit, where the branches are blooming
as fast as new bombers almost . . . Instead of the
adenoidal sermons of “Jew-loving” William J.
Cameron, there will be blurbs for the sale of War
Bonds, with plugs for Sam’s stores completely
eliminated . . . The Detroit Symphony concerts,
hithereo on a national network will, for the time
being be restricted to the Detroit outlet, WWJ
. . . Strange rumors have been circulating ever
since this Detroit Jew dared to sponsor the sym-
phony . . . Rumor has it— with as little or as
much truth as any rumor—that the reason that the
Detroit Symphony Society decided not to bear
the load of future deficits was not because of gas
rationing and other war conditions (as claimed)
but because so plebian an outfit as Sam’s Cut-Rate
had horned in on radio sponsorship . . . And so
scores of men who might have been thrown out
on their ears will have a job — thanks to the owner
of Sam’s, who, everybody swears, is one of the
nicest citizens of Detroit or any other city . . .
For 21 nights the members of the Detroit Sym-
phony will play, 'even though last year’s deficit-
payers turned up their noses . . . Oh yes, when
trying to tune in for WWJ, the man you’ll want
to thank for the fine music is Max Osnos (you
thought his first name was Sam?)
PALESTINE BARRICADE
You could beat your brains out and never dis-
cover what kind of brains are responsible for the
censorship in Palestine . . . How explain the
Government’s ripping apart of many issues of The
New Palestine, organ of the American Zionist
Organization, before they’re allowed into the
Jewish homeland? ... Or take the vigorous pro-
test which the Jewish National Council of Palestine
registered against the naming of Lord Moyne
as Deputy Minister of State in the Middle East
on the ground that he is violently anti-Zionist. Did
you see that in any American source? And talking
about anti-Zionists, how come nobody let out a
peep about George Wadsworth, the man trans-
ferred from Jerusalem to Rome under mysterious
circumstances, with no secret made of it by the
Jews of Palestine that Arabophilc Wadsworth used
his post on every occasion to convey his own pe-
culiar outlook to the anti-Zionist dominated State
Department? . . . Wadsworth now represents the
USA at Damascus, headquarters of the Pan Arab-
TRUE TO LIFE
How Irving Berlin must gnash his teeth that he’s
had to violate his own sense of modesty—for the
sake of patriotism! . . . The tune-twister has ap-
proved a biographical script for the Hollywood
version of “This . Is The Army,” which will prob-
ably net the Army Relief Fund about $5,00,000
when all the profits of the Berlin show are in . . .
Always reluctant to push himself and his own rags-
to-riches tale, Berlin resisted all offers of a com-
mercial nature . . . Now, because he gets nothing
out of it, he consented to a scenario that will take
his life from the days of his first World War hit
until today.
