Melissa beats Argyle to force Game 3
By Adam Boedeker

FRISCO — After a couple of innings
had passed in Game 2 of a regional
quarterfinal series between Argyle and
Melissa on Friday night, it looked as if
Argyle was poised to win the game and
advance to the fourth round of the play-
offs next week with a sweep.
But an early five-run lead didn’t
stand up for Argyle, thanks in large part
to a sloppy defensive effort, and Melissa
rallied to win the game 12-10.

Game 3 is set for today at noon at
Frisco’s Smotherman Field with the
winner punching its ticket to the Class
3A Region II semifinals. Argyle will
look to bounce back after committing
five errors that led to 10 unearned runs
for Melissa.
“We didn’t catch groundballs and we
didn’t throw them across the infield,”
Argyle head coach Ricky Griffin said.
“It’s something that, at this point in the
season, has to happen. They hit the ball
well. I won’t take anything away from
them, but we have to play better de-
fense.”
After two Melissa errors helped Ar-
gyle take a commanding 5-0 lead in the
bottom of the second inning, it ap-
peared the Eagles (29-4) might cruise
to a win after a dramatic 9-8 victory in
Game 1 on Thursday night.
Instead, it turned out, the lead did
not even last a frill inning as frill chaos
ensued in the following half-inning on
one seemingly routine play.
With two outs and the bases loaded,
Argyle starting pitcher Seth Jones had
allowed two runs (one earned) and had
a chance to kill the Cardinals’ threat and
keep the lead. Jones did his job, but his
defense didn’t do theirs as a throw from
third baseman Davis Coghlan on a
grounder from Landon Wilson sailed
over the head of first baseman Parker
Mushinski and the ball rolled into foul
territory in the outfield. Another errant
throw into the Melissa dugout on the
relay allowed Wilson to cross home
plate to score four runs on the errors
and give the Cardinals a 6-5 lead.
“He had good stuff”’ Griffin said of
Jones, his senior lefty, who was charged
with just two earned runs on the night
in six innings of work. “It’s tough to
pitch like that. You feel like you have to
strike people out, and that’s not his
game. His game is to get groundballs,
which he did. We just didn’t take care of
him.”

In another balanced bouquet of
pitching and hitting for TWU that
saw senior pitcher Larisa Garcia hold
St. Edward’s to just three hits, it was
TWITs demonstrative defense that
fortified the Pioneers’ 4-1 victory in
the first game of the NCAA South
Central Super Regional at Pioneer
Field on Friday night.

“It was a relaxed intensity and that
allowed us to make those plays be-
cause the team is ready to make that
play,” TWU head coach Richie Bruis-
ter said of his team’s defense. “They
want the ball hit to them to and when
you’re ready, you get an opportunity to
make those great plays.”
Right out of the gates, the Pioneers’
stockade of Lone Star Conference,
gold-glove winning defenders in Jor-
dan Readicker and Lizzy Kelly put
their stamp on the game.
After a quick groundout and
strong throw by Readicker, Kelly
made a swift diving play in left center
field for the second out. Garcia got
ahead in the count of the next two bat-
ters, but relinquished two walks to put
herself into a hole. Garcia then forced
the fifth hitter Faith Roberts to
ground to her as she calmly threw to
Kendra Sancet at first base to escape
the danger and inning.
“I think definitely after that catch
by Lizzy, you could tell that sent the
momentum for the game,” Garcia
said. ‘We were going to play some
good ball and good defense and we
did. Everybody was great on defense
and that’s what we needed to do.”

Damron strikes out 15 to lead Krum

At first, Josh Reeves thought he had
yanked the pitch foul. But maybe, the
Krum catcher told himself, the line
drive would stay fair and bang off the
left-field wall.
It stayed fair, all right. And cleared
the fence with only inches to spare.
The fourth-inning bullet went for a
three-run home run and made his Bob-
cats a winner Friday night against
Princeton in the opener of a best-of-
three Class 3A Region II quarterfinal
series at Bronco Field.
With big lefty Ty Damron striking
out 15 Panther batters while allowing
only one hit, the Bobcats nailed down
the 4-0 victory. They will go for the
clincher today at 1 p.m. If the series re-
quires a third game, it will be played lat-
er this afternoon.

third-base coaching box. “It was only
about a foot over. And it was some time-
ly hitting.”
It was the first home run this season
for Reeves, Krum’s strong-armed catch-
er who will pitch today after authoring a
four-hitter in last week’s closeout game
against Ferris. But it wasn’t Reeves’ first
home run.
“It was definitely the fastest I’ve ever
had a home run get out of the park,” he
said.
The big blow came after Krum’s
Brennan Ellis and Justin Graham led
off the fourth by working full-count
walks off Princeton starter David Gieke.
“I was looking for a fastball,” Reeves
said. “He gave me one to hit, a fastball

SUNNYVALE — This was not the
way the Sanger softball team wanted to

The Lady Indians scored one run in
the first inning, then were shut out the
rest of the way, stranding six batters
through four innings in a 5-1 loss to the
Lady Vandals in Game 1 of the series at
Sunnyvale High School.
Sanger, ranked No. 4 in the Texas
Girls Coaches Association state poll,
was limited to five hits, all in the first
three innings, and managed just two
baserunners over the final five innings.
“We were outplayed, we were out-
pitched, we were outhit, and that’s all
I've got to say,” Sanger coach Jae
McMinn said. “We didn’t play well.
They did and I've got a long ride home.”
The Lady Indians (30-5) will have to
regroup quickly with Game 2 of the se-
ries at 3 p.m. today back in Sunnyvale,

MOUNT PLEASANT - Pilot

ance runs on Friday night.

Pilot Point 1-3, Commerce 0-2
But considering the way Cagle
pitched, the Lady Cats didn’t need to.
Cagle stymied Commerce’s bats in
two games, and Pilot Point swept Com-
merce in the Class 2A Region II best-of-
three semifinal series at Northeast Tex-

After Cagle pitched a no-hitter in Pi-
lot Point’s 1-0 victory in Game 1 of the
series, the Lady Cats held on for the 3-2
victory in Game 2.
The senior signed to Northwestern
State University of Louisiana followed
up a 13-strikeout performance with
nine strikeouts in Game 2.
