meals only. Of course they arc asked to look after the old people,
but they can’t always furnish companionship and entertainment.
Another important point is: So far, only the poor and the unfortunate
are cared for, insofar as the bare necessities of life are concerned.
In a Home such as we are planning the personnel will not only
be charged with the responsibility of giving the guests Kosher meals
but also to attend to the religious, companionship and occupational
needs of the Guests to make them content and happy.
First, you state the Agencies and facilities here are adequate and
are doing their job well, then knowing we have a list of old people
who wish to enter this new Home you ask for a confidential list of
the names. If the facilities are adequate and the agencies have been
doing a thoroughly complete job, how could we ever get a list of
people to go into the new Home. Perhaps, you don’t believe we have
a list of people. Well, Mr. White—we have. It is confidential in-
formation and shall remain as such until the Home is opened and
these old men and women are in the Home.
In this new Home we will take care of more than the poor and
the unfortunate. We will take into consideration old men’s and
women’s souls, ideals, and their religious wishes and needs. This
Home will not be just a philanthropic endeavor, but' it will be a
home with a religious background. This seems to be jhe big fact
the opponents of the Home are side-stepping. In this Home
“Yiddishkeit” will not only be professed but also practiced in the
old traditional way.
I wish to state here and now, that in the light of what has happen-
ed in the last ten years in this world: We Jews don’t have to take a
back seat or be ashamed of any part of our real Jewishness. Our
religion, our customs, our ideals, our morals, our family life, our
dietary laws, our oudook on life, and our general behavior is on a
par with any people on this earth. We should neither hide or be
ashamed of our Jewishness. We can openly manifest being Jews
and openly practice Jewish religious behaviour.
Now, Mr. White, you ask for Rules and Regulations; you ask for
a budget; you ask by what standards we shall hire the personnel. As
an avowed opponent of the Home why are you entided to any facts
any more than any member of the Jewish community? Furthermore,
Mr. White, you are an extremely clever person; you have a great
deal of ability with the pen; if I give you all the informadon, ^id as
an avowed opponent of the Home, you could very easily ana very
skillfully manipulate this knowledge and thus perhaps show up
this new Home in a very bad light.
The fact remains, that the Jewish community is endded to the facts
and the Jewish community will get the facts. Before all the facts
are known there are several matters that I wish to still express my
self on. ^ - -
In your article you mention that membership means nothing, that
some of our most discredited organizations, the Bunds and the
Klu Klux Klan and others of the ilk, had membership. I, for one,
could expect a goy or someone who doesn’t like Jews to compare
us to the above named organizations, but it should not come from
a Real Jew who has done as much as you have for the Jewish
Community. The people who organized this Home are Jews. Decent,
honest and every-day Jews, who have ideals and are trying to do the
right thing as they see it, and it is downright disgraceful to compare
our organization, in any sense, with the Bunds or K. K. K.
A. Meinstein.
Editor’s note: Due to the length of. this communication, we are
compelled to run the balance of the Vice President of the proposed
Old Folks Home’s letter in the next week’s issue of the Herald-Voice.
