versal prosperity characterizes the
entire southern states A country
once considered almost worthless
without the manipulation of slave
labor is showing itself equal to the
emergency brought about by the
emancipation proclamation men
who once believed that they could
not wait upon themselves have
learned that they can cultivate the

their places at any kind of useful
and profitable manual labor Lands
once considered worthless are be
ing rejuvenated by the use of fer-
tilizers and proper culture old
methods of agriculture aro giving
way and everywhere implements
of the best improved patterns are
being brought into requisition
One man by the use of modern
improvements is doing the work
formerly expected of four and
with such results as wonderfully
increase the products of the soil
Manufacturing enterprises once
thought to be the exclusive right
of New England are now spring-
ing up throughout the entire sonth
and her people instead of being
the slaes of their northern and
eastern neighbors are becoming
their rivals in many of the various
lines of manufacture Cailroad

been profitably manipulated and
have added materially to the grow-
ing wealth of the south while the
fish and stock from the waters and
prairies of the south are supplying
a large portion of the world with
food jilany of these sources of
wealth are yet in their infancy as
far as the south is concerned bnt
with their development and pro-
gress tho south bids fair to be still
more prosperous and to become of
sufficient importance in the world
to be regareed as one of the chief
factors in the prosperity of the na-
tion if not of the financial and com
mercial prosperity of the entire
world
While this rapid advancement
and improvement is being recog
nized abroad and the south is
again taking her proper place in
the business world her people are
enjoying the first fruits of this
abundant prosperity An increase
of nearly five hundred millions of
dollars in the assessed values of
property general business pros-
perity success in mining and man-
ufacturing enterprises n reestab-
lishment of good educational facil-
ities constant and profitable inter-
course with the chief business
marts of the world and last but
not least the reduction of nearly
fifty per cent in the rate of taxa-
tion should make her people hap-

as to the progress made and the
favorable outlook for the land once
thought to be utterly ruined but
lest we become vain in the con
templation of our own prosperity
let the foregoing suffice

Pacific system has just purchased
valuable wharf franchises at Eock
port from the ColemanFulton

Macaroni road from Victoria to
Bockport The price paid is not
known The information is re-
liable coming as it does from Col-
lector Bailey This might form a
competition line as a gulf outlet
for the San Antonio Aransas
Pass route the progress of which
seems to have attracted the most
marked attention from railroad
corporations which were disposed
to
sneer at the enterprise in the
beginning
Dr Newman said many things
in his recent political sermon that
had been better omitted bnt when
he said the people of this country
were tired of hearing of the Irish

told a blessed truth It does seem
ridiculous and inconsistent to talk
of any other than an American

James Bussell Lowell uttered a
trucism when he said Our pub-
lic schools teach too little or too
much too little if education is to
go no further and too many things
if what is tanght is to be taught
thoroughly Tho brain of the
average pupil under the present
system resembles a cabinetwhere

fied nor arranged the facts are

contests than a misty conception of
many things The majority of
those who aro expected to be ben
efitted by tho free schools are from
a class who need to be furnished
with tools for the workshop of
bieadwinning and to wield them
successfully they must be skilled
in the capability of these and have
