Dear Editor:
The bright orange flames wara
reflected in the tears of the stu-
dents as they watched in disbabaC
their beloved school was reduced
to ashes Cries and sobs were
heard throughout the gathering
crowd This was not just a school
burning to the ground, this was
stability, this was safety, this re-
ally was a second home
For some who had been coming
here fix over twelve years, it was a
place they spent more waking
hours per day than home. This
was more than the loss of just a
school For some they were bat-
tling a fire that was engulfing the
school they had attended, their
children had attended and now
their grandchildren were attend-
ing. This was more than a school
This was a part of us.
On Thursday, January 8, 1998
at about 7:30 p.m. a fire was dis-
covered in the home economics
room at the Gustine High School
building. Early attempts to extin-
guish the fire proved more than
one man and eventually nine fire
departments could handle. So
many people joined in the fight
and believe me it was indeed a
battle, there is no way the people
of Gustine can ever thank every-
one personally but I can tell you
we are grateful beyond expression
Thank You so much, everyone.
So much is lost, there is a griev-
ing process, our kids will have to
get through. So will the grown-
ups for that matter Lockers full of
personal items, a science room
ones.
We will band together, we are
like that in Gustine, we will come
back stronger, bigger, better The
school had already taken steps to
evolve into one of the best educa-
tion facilities in Central Texas,
that has not changed. We were
looking to building new class-
rooms and now we are. Long be-
fore it was suggested that it takes
a ‘village to raise a child’ we dis-
covered it takes love and we love
our children and we will give them
the best. We have a great bunch of
kids and with a little help they too
will come out of this stronger
God bless our children, and ev-
eryone who helps makes make
Gustine, Gustine. We are truly one
of the great little towns in Texas
and are very proud. Thanks again
to everyone who came to our aid,
God bless you everyone.
By,
John Lee Roming
