MUSINGS

With the thought in mind that
the weather was too muggy and
chilly to go to the museum this
weekend that no one would ven-
ture out, we might be using the
utilities unnecessarily, but on
Sunday afternoon, several must
have had “cabin fever” because
there were several visitors at the
museum

John Wesley Hardin and his
family We are promised some of
the books, when they are
available.
The small glass case m the
museum that presently contains
the Hardin memorabilia is not
large enough for the display, in
which there is an old leather-
bound Texas Court of Appeals
Book, donated by Ben Sudderth,
regarding the trial of John Wesley
Hardin, along with full statement
offsets in 1877.'
Kathleen Marshall donated the
old Police Whistle, having be-
longed to Brown County Deputy
Sheriff Charlie Webb In 1874,
when Charlie Webb was killed by
John Wesley Hardin the whistle
fell from Webb’s body to the
ground and Jim Nabors, a great
uncle of Kathleen Greene
Marshall, picked it up and it had
remained in the family since that
time.
Medford Stephens donated the
large silver-rtumip Elgin pocket
watch belonging to his great-
great-grandfather Jack Wright, at
whose salooiV'the escapade took
place in 1874.
Dice, poker chips, and playing
cards are displayed as they were
on the bar in the El Paso Saloon
when John Wesley Hardin was
killed in 1895. According to the
book “Life of John Wesley Har-
din”, as told by himself, it was
stated that Hardin had thrown the
dice and told his playing partner.
Brown, that the dice were thrown,
and he would have to beat four
sixes and an ace El Paso lawman
Selman stepped through the door
and shot Hardin in the back
Shells from a 50-70 caliber rifle,
as was used by John Wesley Har-
din, was commonly referred to as
a “Needle Gun”, or spring-field
trap-door rifle, or carbine rifle. The
“Needle Gun” type gun is shown
in a larger showcase nearby.
- The Comanche County Criminal
Docket, District Court, is shown
open at the entry of the Case
Number _, and entry of the
indictment of John Wesley Hardin
and James Taylor for murder,-
October 31,1874
There is a large photo of the red-
brick Courthouse of September
28, 1877, where John Wesley
Hardin’s trial was held for the
murder of Charlie Webb.
Two pistols, used in the period
of ‘70's and ‘80's, are in the
showcase along with bullets. Fain
McDaniel bought some coins of
that date, of which the one-half
dollar was dated 1874. A green
U S dollar bill of 1870 is dis-
played.
A copy of the manuscript of
Mollie Moore Godbold, regarding
the Hardin Gang as written from
interviews with Sheriff John
Carnes and others, is displayed.
Also, various books written re-
garding the Hardin family
Jack Hasty donated the tin
voting box used in an 1894
election in Gonzales, Texas, where
anwnhy-thanaqna of ACdsmsny
got beat for sheriff after John
Wesley Hardin had been his main
supporter It was then that John
Wesley Hardin 'eft Gonzales
County.
Some photos of the Hardin
family are shown. One photo is of
Jo G. Hardin and wife Arrabella,
¥also known as Ally B. (Adams)
Hardin, is displayed. This was
possibly the wedding picture taken
in 1872. We think, now the
display will not look so crowded
when we get the larger showcase.

discussed next week
