fires is Electrical and is usually
caused by faulty wiring,
overloaded circuits and improper
use of extension cords Always
avoid running extension cords
under carpet, rugs and doorways,
be sure to check all cords to make
sure they are not frayed or
damaged, if they are damaged in
any way replace the cord. Check
to make sure that you are not
overloading your electrical outlets
by plugging to many items into
them, if you use an power strip
make sure it has a surge protector
on it
What is the best way to
prevent fires? Common Sense
and the use of smoke alarms as an
early warning in the event of a
fire, always place smoke detectors
near each sleeping area and on
each level of the house. Make
sure and check the batteries in the
smoke alarms each month. The
next step is to develop and
practice Home Fire Escape Drills
or Exit Drills In The Home
(EDITH) develop the plan and
practice it to be prepared in the
event of a home fire. Always
know 2 ways out and have a
central meeting place outside the
home.
The fire department would
like for everyone to make sure
their houses are numbered with
large reflective letters visible from
the street in the event of an
emergency. Also any family
interested in a Home Safety
Checklist contact the Comanche
Volunteer Fire Department at
356-2112 or come by the fire
station for a copy.

seeking grant,
sunrey sought
The City of De Leon is
including a survey for the Parks,
Recreation & Open Space Needs
Citizen Survey. An application
has been applied for through the
Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department Recreation and Parks
Account for a grant in the amount
of $500,000.00. The first
qualification for this grant is to
process the survey which will be
graded in a points system,
depending on what the citizens
recommendations are in
completing these surveys. This
park facility will be available to
all areas citizens. The City of De
Leon appreciate your assistance
in the completion and return of
the surveys enclosed in this
edition of the Chief. Please return
the surveys on or before October
19, 2001.

Leo Williams of Desdemona
was re-elected as a director of the
Upper Leon Soil and Water
Conservation District #525. The
election was held October 4,2001
at the Boomtown Cafe in
Desdemona, Texas.
Leo has many years
experience in the field of
Agriculture. He taught in area
schools as a Vocational
Agriculture teacher, he is a
farmer, ex-dairyman, former
president of the Eastland County
Farm Bureau and former state
director of the Texas Farm
Bureau.

Second Blessing
of Animals held
By Father Riggs
The Second Annual Blessing
of the Animals took place on
Sunday afternoon in the first stage
of the Memorial Gardens’ project
of The Episcopal Church of St.
Matthew’s at 500 N. Austin
Street. The program was framed
by the music of the quartet of the
Methodist Church, singing music
written by St. Francis Following
scripture read by John Dudley and
a homily by Father John Riggs,
each animal was blessed Gigi
Riggs and Ginger Dudley were in
charge of the refreshments.
An unusual pet contest
followed. The judges nor the
writer of this article are breed
experts, but they do know quality
when they see it. The King of the
Beasts whs ‘Tox*°the dog owned
by Lana Sphttll. ’ Kiost
Outstanding Pure Bred dog was
“Tex” from Jim and Margaret
Dudley. The Most Outstanding
Mixed Breed was “Fred” from
Reggie and Randy Gill. Laziest
Animal award went to a lamb,
“Mark”, owned by T.J. Dudley.
The Most Energetic Dog was
“Blue” owned by Lala Spruill.
The Cat of the Jungle is owned by
Helen Arnold and was a black and
white feline called “Grade” The
pet that came the longest distance
was “Sugar Bear” owned by Pete
and Gerald Wright. Oldest Beast
present was “Moo Goo”, a one-
eyed Pug dog presented by
Elizabeth Gleaton.
This event has grown since
last year and is indeed and act of
celebration. It is prayed that the
event will be larger and more
ecumenical next October.
