The training officer sets the
stage for the training scenario,
dictating the order of respon-
dents based on distance to the
call. Thiessen said the number
of departments involved in a
training exercise is determined
by how many would respond in
a real situation.
The first company would ar-
rive and begin work finding the
fire, checking for people in the
buildings and so on, as if they
were the first on scene, followed
by the other companies, he said.
Firefighters don’t often get
access to buildings like the
steakhouse provided, and since
it and other buildings were set to
be knocked down anyway,
Thiessen said fire officials asked
AGL Constructors if they could
use the facilities.
“AGL has been great to work
with,” Thiessen said.
He noted that there are some
more buildings set to come
down in Lewisville and officials
are looking at training in those
as well. It’s all about getting as
close to real-life experiences as
possible, he said.
“We have training buildings.
Lewisville has a training build-
ing we use. We can do it outside
at our fire station and some
training is in the classroom,”
Thiessen said. “The problem is
the layout is the same. It’s nice to
get these other buildings where
you don’t know the layout very
well and you get guys who have
to do some other things to get
around.”
The Lewisville Fire Depart-
ment provided a smoke ma-
chine as well as a fire simulator
— basically a big-screen televi-
sion that can be programmed to
display fire images that firefight-
ers can spray with their hoses,
said Jeff Smith, division chief of
training.
“This [kind of opportunity]
comes around once a decade, to
be able to get in commercial
buildings, cut holes in the roof,
break glass, like the good old
days where you could take a
house and bum it,” Smith said
with a chuckle.

MONROE, La. (AP) - A
northeast Louisiana prosecutor
said he’s dismissing the ticket is-
sued to a Texas teenager who ap-
parently fell asleep at the wheel,
causing a wreck that killed five
members of his family. The 16-
year-old boy, who was not iden-
tified, and two passengers were
injured, one critically.
“This young man has been
punished enough,” District At-
torney Jerry Jones told The
News-Star. “There is no need to
add to his pain. The ticket will be
dismissed.”
He has dismissed the misde-
meanor ticket for careless driv-
ing, KNOE-TV reported.
State police said the blended
family’s sport utility vehicle
veered off Interstate 20 in Oua-
chita Parish near Calhoun and
flipped about 11 p.m. Wednes-
day, ejecting six of the eight oc-
cupants. Three children and two
adults were pronounced dead.
