Thlnrs In America Are
tho
Smallest OnoH lie Says
From Invention A French engineer
who lias been on a tour of Inspection In
the state was not impressed by the big
things of the country I Bhall report
tb my government says he that the
biggest things In America are the little
things The French people are experts
In domestic economy and live comfort-
ably by saving what average families
in the states throw away But Amer-
icans are on the other hand experts In
industrial economy They make money
by saving wastage in the business and
lose some of It by wastage in domestic
economy The attention paid to small
details In big works Is amazing to me
I havo visited some establishments
where I believe that the profits are
made not in the manufacture proper
but in the saving of materials and labor
by close attention to details that arc
with us unconsidered trifles For ex-
ample I saw a grindstone In operation
at a big works automatically sharpen-
ing lathe and planer tools This ma
chino costs probably as much as 100 of
our ordinary grindstones cost but I see
that it automatically grinds all the
tools for 300 highpriced mechanics
and it only works a few hours each
day The skilled mechanics In our
country frequently stop their lcgular
work to grind their own tools and then
do It imperfectly In the states tools
are all accurately ground to the best
shape by the machine so that they do
more and better work on this account
in n given time I believe that that ma-
chine has brains the brains of the In-
ventor and It has no doubt revolution-
ized work of this kind in American ma-
chine shops This Is but one case out
of many that I have noted The vis-
itor correctly defined a peculiar charac-
teristic of American lnventlvo genius
The great engineering undertakings
the immense manufacturing establish-
ments and the leviathan machinery are
of course most conspicuous and im-
pressive but theso big things aro com-
paratively few in number while tho
novel improvements in little things
usually classed as yankeo notions
are legion and each one contributes its
tntto toward the general sum of pros-
perity of the business of tho country
How lie Was Cured
A well known musician who writes a-
very illegible hand onco sent an un-
usually hopeless scrawl to a friend
Tho latter studied it a minute gave It
up in despair and then sat down and
wrote in reply I shall bo most happy
to dine with you tomorrow at C Kind-
est regards to your wife Yours etc
In less than half an hour his friend ap-
peared breathless at Ilia door
Theres some misunderstanding said
he anxiously I wrote you a note
asking If you could play tho piano part
Of tho trio at Browns recital and hero
youve sent me an acceptance of a din-
ner invitation I m sorry but I didnt
invite you to dinner Well re-
turned the other blandly I didnt sup-
pose youd really sent mo an Invita-
tion to dinner but I couldnt read a
word of your note and In that case
hero after I moon always to take It for
granted that youre asking me to dine

feulil to Have Proof
Ohlcisro February 2 A special to
tho Tribune from Wellington wiyn
I do not propose to do anything lit nil
to pieclpttfile war with Spain Up to
the present I do not think vrav H either
necessary or Inevitable I would bo
lax In my duty however If I did not
prepare for the future The situation
Is grave and tlie policy of the mlmln
ltralion will be determined almost en-
tirely by the course of events from
time to time There Is no necessity of
alarming the people but congress must
lie ready to asslJt tho administration
without milking too ninny Inquiries na
k > the course of current events
To a senator who called upon lilin
Wednesday In order to ask some seri
ous questions as to llio policy of the
administration President McKlnley
with the utmost frankness uttered tho
nliove words There is now no doubt
that the government of the United
States Is actually preparing for war
with Spain It does not follow tlliit
war will come but the activity In
both the nrmy and navy departments
Is too unmistakable to lie concealed
The president and bis cabinet unite
In the belief In spite of all evidence to
the contrary that tllio explosion of the
Maine was the result of an unfortu-
nate accident but they recognize the
fact that the contrary may prove true
at almost any hour and more If It Is
shown even inferentlnlly that Spain
had a hand In Hie catastrophe there
will bo but one ithlng to do and that
will be to seize the Island of Cuba by
force of arms
McKlnley Said to Hare Proof
Chicago February 2T > Sam M Iiur
dette staff correspondent telegraphs
the Chronicle from Washington
The president Is striving to post-
pone ns long ns possible the crisis
which Is utmost certain to be preclpltnt
ed by the report of the board of in-
quiry commissioned to Investigate tho
destruction of the battleship Maine
In Inner circles of the administra-
tion It Is no longer pretended that the
Maine was blown up by accident Good
authority Is given for the assertion
that Mr McKlnley has bad In his pos-
session for tlnee days positive evidence
showing that the Maine was destroyed
by external agencies The Spatilsh nu
tliorltles are aware that tho president
has this evidence In his possession and
they have sent messages which liavo
been Lent from the public disavowing
all responsibility for the net and offer-
ing to make an humble apology ns
well as a monetary compensation for
the damage Inflicted nn In short to
do anything which may bo done hon-
orably to prevent war between Spain
and tho United States
Tho evidence In the presidents
hands falls to disclose the identity of
the men who are responsible for the
awful crime At least three persons
are concerned and one of the them is
known to bo a Spanish oflicer It is
not doubted that all the guilty parties
will be Identified and promptly put
to death by tho Spanish ofllclnls at
Havana Tills Information lias conio
to me from a reliable cource Develop-
ments during the last twentyfour
hours have convinced me ot Its truth
President McKlnley desires delay
for two reasons He wants present
excitement to subside nnd ho wants
time to prepare for war which may-
be caused at most any day by act of
congress
At tho state department they are
now figuring on tho amount to be
asked ns an Indemnity It will be in
tho neighborhood of 10000000

A Oas Geyser
CoTsIennn Tex Feb 27 The city
generally and oil circles particularly
were worked up to a high pitch of ex-
citement by news from the Pratt
Gormley well located near Chatfleld
yesterday morning This well was ft
wildcat and was drilled as a prospect
to determine if the oil field that has
been developed here extended that far
to the northeast and progress in it has
been closely watched by all interested
In oil development The news that
was brought in yesterday morning was
that at a depth of 8C2 feet after pass-
ing through a sand rock a great vol-
ume of gas had been struck that
rushed out of the mouth of the well
with such force that the sound pro-
duced by it could be heard a mile
away and the gaB became to thing In
the wellhouso that in order to prevent
nn explosion all lights and flres had to
bo extinguished When this news be-
came current thero was a hlgera of oil-
men from the city to tho well which
is located about ten miles from tho
city There was no oil struck at the
depth where the gas was struck but
the sand was not only favorable but
promised to be the best sand that has
yet been encountered The flow of gas
was so strong that operations in the
well had to be suspended for the time
and it could not be determined whether
or not at a lower level oil would be
found though oil men wero almost
confident that it would be and the
general opinion was that If oil was se-
cured af that point the work of devel-
opment would attain such dimensions
here that the present facilities for
drilling wells would not be sufficient to
meet the demands All the territory
between Corslcana and Chatfleld is
covered by oil leases held by different
people who have done nothing in the
new territory in the way of develop-
ment work but this strike no matter
if oil Is not struck will put scores of
rigs to work
