t? Joe who? Starkey? No, I . . - oh, wait. I guess
that name up over that eating place down the
road where the high-school bunch likes to go. My boy said
something about driving over to Joe’s the other night.
But why do you bring him up? What’s that? Oh, I have
heard people say he keeps a couple of slots in the backroom
and .lets some of the boys and girls back there to play ’em
. . . those with cash. Yes, they say he sells liquor to the
kids. In fact, there was a little stink when those four kids
were killed in an accident; some said they had had a few
drinks at Joe Starkey’s place.
But you said VIPs: Important people. Joe’s just a little
restaurant man. Now take Maryan. Handles the Chicago
stuff for one of the big trades. There’s a gal to know! Why,
she can make a small deal look good and a big one look
small, just according to how she writes it up! Make or
break a man, nearly!
Miss Touhy? No, I don’t remember that name. Time-
buyer or what? Oh the school nurse? I suppose my wife’s
heard of her. She takes care of most of that school stuff
for us. I never have time, y’know. Too much pressure. Big
Stuff to handle. What about this Miss Touhy? She’s nobody.
Maybe draws down two grand a year or two and a half. What ?
Qh, she found out a girl was near-sighted when everybody
thought the kid was dumb? Oh, in my girl’s same room!
Well! Got the girl glasses, did they? Head of the class now.
Can you beat that! Well, slip this Miss Touhy a raise. She
deserves another hundred a year. My daughter? Oh, I think
she’s 1*11 right. They send those slips home from school if
there’s anything wrong—teeth or ears or eyes. They take
pretty good care of that stuff these days, I guess from what
„Lhear. Had an article on it in one of the Sunday mags.
- Didn’t get time to finish it. Something about 5 to 7 of
U.S. kids having less than normal hearing. But you were
talking about Very Important People!
Henry Lee? Only one I ever heard of was in the song
. . what’s that, under the tree, looking for Henry Lee?
Why? Is there a VIP by that name around one of the agen-
cies or networks? What? New man at the public library!!
Didn’t know they ever had any men at libraries. What about
im? Some dry, dusty bird. I’ll bet.
'How’s that? Started a new book club for the kids? Got
ithe school reading classics? Well, say, now, that is an
iplishment. Have to get him a write-up in one of the
■dailies. They go for human interest stuff like that.
But to get back to your first question. You asked me
who were some of the Very important people I know. Well,
{3am doesn’t really place any business with us . . . but
» mail like him,’ shooting right up to veepee in charge of

cwn so much. Sam gets around in the 70s without too much

a telephone call from a lady w!
lives in the apratment house at
Uvalde, where ra» brother, W. R.
Hardy lives. Sne told me my
brother had a heart attack. She
had called the doctor and the doc-
tor had called an ambulance and
he had been taken to the hos-
pital. The doctor said he would
have to be in an iron lung and
have a special nurse. These had
already been secured. These
friends had taken the initiative
in every detail and everything
was under control.
The doctor had said the daugh-
ter who lives in Connecticut
should be notified. The Uvalde
friend tried desperately to get
in touch with the daughter, but
there had been a heavy snow-
storm in that area and telephone
and electric wires were down.
As a last resort the cops and
highway patrolmen were asked
to relay the message. It was be-
tween 9 and 10 o’clock Monday
morning before the daughter
contacted the Uvalde friend. She
would leave by plane as soon as
she could make a few necessary
adjustments, so she left their
Connecticut home at 12:30 o’clock
Monday afternoon and was in
Uvalde about 12:30 Monday night.
Uvalde friends met the plane in
San Antonio around 10:30 o’clock.
I mention these details to indi-
cate how friends were cooperat-
ing, but here is another personal
touch which was also greatly ap-
preciated. Mrs. Hardy and I went
to the hospital early Monday
morning and during the morning
some Uvalde friends who learned
we were there phoned and invit-
ed us to lunch with them. While
at this home we were shown a
bedroom with private bath and
told that it was ours to use if we
wanted to spend the night or stay
longer. At the hospital a Uvalde
nurse whom we have known a
long time told us she had two
spare bedrooms for us if we ex-
pected to stay in Uvalde over
night or longer. Not only were
the bedrooms available, but we
could use the kitchen to fix our
own eats, if we wanted to.
I have refrained from calling
names because these friends
cans are in control in Washing-
ton now, but I’d like to remind
em that Republican taxes are
just as hard to pay as Democratic
taxes. A lot of people voted for
City made to myaon J. D. Dunn,
and his. family. The Williamson
County papers wish, to carry the
story, since he was born in this
county and lived here all his life
until he moved to your section.

J.A. TELLS CONGRESS OF
TAX REDUCTION PROBLEMS
EDITOR’S NOTE: The Turkey
Creek Philosopher on his John- j
son grass farm has a proposal on
the tax subject this week, the j
value of which you can decide
for yourself.
Dear editar:
If it’s not one thing it’s another.
Here we were just gettin over!
the cost of Christmas and what
happens? Congress meets. Not
only that, but the Texas Legisla-
ture is gettin underway.
Understand, I’m not opposed to
these legislative bodies meetin,
that’s their job, but I would like
to remind em of a few things.
Take Congress. The Republi-

....’gettin stung by
ur red ants instead of five.
But I have a proposal to make
to Congress. While everybody
Im-
posed to high taxes ever since
Jim Ferguson thought up the
slogan, everybody also knows
taxes have been goin up all the
time, regardless of who’s in. And
it hasn't been the politicians’
fault altogether. Everybody is in
favor of reducin public expendi-
tures everywhere except in his
own area, and when you multiply
that by every area in the United
States, you’re back where you
started from.
So here’s my proposal: if the
Republicans in Washington will
! forget about reducin taxes and
1 just hold the tort where it is,
that’ll be something. Don’t waste
any time tryin to reduce taxes,
just don’t raise em any. Just stop-
pin the trend, without reversin
it, will be such a feat most people
will consider the campaign prom-
ise to reduce has been fulfilled.
A man driftin out to sea may not
be out of danger of drownin just
because his driftin has been halt-
ed, but it at least would be en-
j couragin.
You understand of course
I this does not apply to any pen-
sion I have slated to come my
way, to any project which will
improve this area. What Con-
gress wants to do is eliminate the
inefficient projects, and we ain’t
got none like that around here.
As for what’s gonna happen in
the Texas Legislature, don’t be
lookin at me for the answer. It’s
hard enough to tell what they’ve
done after they’re through, not to
mention before they’ve started.
Yours faithfully,
J.A.
