flash flood trapped their car.
A tornado near Waco damaged
several buildings on the E. W.
Wilkinson farm in Coryell Coun-
ty. Other twisters were sighted in
the area at Harmon, Belton,
Lampasas, Valley Mills, Hamilton
and McGregor.
Early this morning rains con-
tinued at many points in the state.
The U. S. Weather Bureau fore-
cast more showers and thunder-
storms through tomorrow. 1
Four of the six pupils got out
of the Lometa bus safely. The
driver, Thomas Knox, a teacher,
saved a girl but a log floated into
young Whittenburg and he was
tom loose from the bus and
drowned.
Tornadoes that played hop-skip-
and-jump aid tornado warnings
kept much of Texas jittery Tues-
day as the turbulent weather
brought downpours that in many
sections the best rains received
in years. •
Possible tornado warnings for a
wide sector were issued by the
Weather Bureau for late Tuesday
night but no confirmed twisters
were reported. -
The heaviest rain reported was
at Dirifty, north of Brownwopd,
where 12 inches foil Tuesday. The
community was under two feet of
water and all of its 150 residents
had been evacuated.
Rains continued today at Gal-
veston, HoustoV Corpus Christl,
Austin, Midland, College Station,
Brownwood, Waco, Dallas, Miner-
al Wells, Lubbock and Wichita
Falls.
Water stood as high as the win-
dows of cars in low areas of Waco
Tuesday and some motorists had
to be rescued. No water stood .in
the main section of the city.
At Gatesville, Mill’s Branch
went out of its banks and washed
away a home belonging to Floyd
White. Five other homes were
flooded.
At Stephenville, where 500 per-
sons were evacuated Monday
night, flood waters were receding
and some families were returning
home.
Floods blocked highways at a
number of central and West Texas
points. At Brownwood U.S. 67 and
377 were closed. The Highway De-
partment estimated floods had
caused 3250,000 damage to roads,
culverts and bridges in that area.
The turbulent weather Tuesday
brought a hail storm to Del Rio
and dust storms to the Panhandle.
Despite the damage by flooding,
the rains were welcomed after sev-
eral years of drought and an un-
usually dry winter and spring.
Heavy rain raised the level of
many lakes.
Since Sunday, rain totals of 4
to 8 inches were common. At Dal-
las 6.16 indies had fallen, more
than half the total of 10.98 Inches
for all 1996. At Austin, where near-
ly 2 inches fell In 3 hours Tuesday,
the rains were termed the best
since October of 1953.

WASHINGTON (ft) — The high
and mighty of official Washington,
led by President Eisenhower, and
scores of plain people paid a final
tribute today to Alben W. Bark-
ley.
The President, diplomats, sena-
tors, cabinet members, and Su-
preme Court justices filled the
Pews in Foundry Methodist
Church at funeral services for the
late Kentucky Democratic senator
and former vice president.
And outside the gray stone
church, in a drizzle of rain, other
Americans who had held the sto-
ried “Veep" of the Truman ad-
ministratfon in deep affection
stood silent.
