In our rambles yesterday ne had oc-
casion to visit tho drugafore of Dr S
B Ilamlott and there came iuto posses-
sion of n copy of tho RodLander a pa-
per published at San Augustine and
bearing date of August 191854 Aside
from tho peculiar makoup of the paper
Btylo ot type etc wo became deeply in-
terested in the news it contained and
the names of persons who have since bo
enrne famous in the annals of Texas
history most of whom have passed
away a few of tlo number still remain-
ing Among other paragraphs tho fol-
lowing nbaorbed our attention
The Houston Star learns from a gen-
tleman from the upper Brazos that
Muuroo Black was killed recently near
the falls of tho Brazos by porsons who
attempted his capture He first killed
one of tho party He is the same man
who murdered Barnes near Fort Gra-
ham and subsequently robbed Tlios
Harrison Esq
The older residents of the city will
recognize the Thos Harrison Esq re-
ferred to in the BedLander as Gen
Tom HarriHon then and still a resident
ot Waco To assure ourselves that he
was the party referred to we called nt
his office yesterday and found him
seated among hip books and papers
After exchanging compliments wo
handed him the puper and after
reading the parograph he 8nid ho
was the party referred to but the
statement that Black was killed at tho
fnlls of the Brazos was iucorreot Gou
Harrison then went on to state some-
thing of tho history of Mnnroe Blnck
and got to the interesting part of it
when he spoke of his own ndveuture
with him He said he had heard a great
deal of Muuroo Black as a desperate
man but had nover seen him One
evening he was riding along in tho sad-
dle about it mile from Fort Grahnm
Hill county though he did not know
how far he was from tho place as it was
the first time he had been iu that coun-
try when oil at once he was accosted
in the road by a man on foot
who with cocked pistol de-
manded that he dismount give
up his horso saddlo and money Gon
Hurrisou had a pistol in his saddle bags
which were strapped behind him but to
got to it would have proved fatal and
ho had no alternative but give up his
possessions Black departed and Gen
Harrison went on to Fort Graham whore
ho learned that tho man was Munroo
Black and that ho had just killed n
young man named Barnes Ho went
out to look for his horse on which to
make his escape and meeting Gen
Harrison thought he would bo better
aided in his flight by taking his horse
Geu Harrison said before
he left h = m he thought he
would ask him his name
but refrained as he thought he would
get nu evasivo answer or if given the
mime would be a fictitious one The
murderer aud robber did however ask
General Harrison his name After he
killing of Barnes at Fort Graham the
young mans father who was a man of
means sold out in Tennessee brought
his family to Texas and loeoted about
thirty miles above Graham his avowed
intention in coming hero being to nven o
the murdor of his sou For a number
of years he thought to find Black and
General Ilsrrison aided him for a long-
time Ho was heard of in several places
aud old man Barnes sent to Louisiana
and different points in Texas where it
was reported he had been captured to
see if the right man had boon found
but it always turned out to be tho wrong
party Things went along this way un-
til General Hnrriaou had almost forgot-
ten all about Black when at last he
heard he had been cptured in northern
Texas and being about to bo huug ho
begged the mob to desist as he had
done nothing there for which ho de-
served banging but told them that he
had in Hill couuty and asked them to-
t lce him there At his request he waB
taken to UillHboro under guard
and lodged in jail a log building
with the cells on the upper
iloor and a stairs leading up with a
smrii platform on the ontside Shortly
after being jailed Gen Harrison re-
ceived o note saying We have got
Alunioe Black come up Ho paid
no attention to tho note About tho
same time old man Barnes got a similar
note and getting two young friends he
proceeded post haste to Hillsboro As
he afterwords told Gen Harrison he
fired the old charges out of his shot-
gun and loaded both barrels afresh
putting fourteen blue whistlers in each
and a fresh cap on tho tubes Tlioy
got to Hillsboro at midday and pro
ceeding at once to the jail went
up ttC stairs and wore on the lit
tle platform on the outside only a fow
minutes when they had battered the
door down Stepping in old man
Barnes saw a prisoner chained to the
Iloor and said to him You aro Mun
roo Black ore you To which tho pris-
oner responded I am My name
said tho old man is Barnes and you
killed my son at Fort Graham a fow
years ago and now I have come to kill
you Block asked that he be allowed
a few minutes which he wished to de-
vote to prayer But old muu Barnes
said No you did not give my sou a
miuuto and raising his gun ho
sent twentyeight blue whistlers
through Blacks body death ensuing
instantly Barnes was indicted and
gavo boud He retained Gen Harrison
as counsel and obtained sovoral con-
tinuances The war then came on nud
Gen Harrison outered the army and the
case was continued from term to term in
tho hope that counsel would return At
the end of four years Geu Harrison did
return but had quite forgotten the case
when he was ono day colled upon by
Barnes who said the case was still on
docket unci court being about to sit he
asked that ho have a trial Gen Har-
rison told him he had better try for a
continuance as it was n clear case of
murder and he had no defense to make
The old uiau however insisted
on trial saying if ho was hung they
could take only a few days f i om him nt
best aud if acquitted he wanted to go
back to Tennessee und die at his old
home General Harrison made all the
defense possible and the 8 > nipnhios of
every one being with the old man he
was acquitted and returned to Tennes-
see This said General Harrison was
the kind ot a man Munroe Black was
and the manner in which he camo to his
end intead of being killed at tho falls
of the Brazos

lay giving election returns this week as
they nre incomplete On the same
page the RedLouder gives under the
head of Important News By tho
Southern Line tho latter in brackets
New York items nearly three weeks old
Even in those days they seem to have
had politics and
politicians for we
see their announcements in tho paper
and a correspondent at Shelbyville
sings tho following refrain for some of
the disappointed ones
Hark from the tomb
Tho doleful sonnd
My ears attend the cry
Ye beaten candidates
Come view the ground
Where for tho nest two years
You have to lie
The correspondent says the election
passort off in our county without much
fighting only a few oldfashioned fisti-
cuffs with Mr Alcohol who never fails
to mako himself conspicuous in both
tho public and private acts of man In
the same letter we sco Harriot was
elected county surveyor and was per
haps one of the family of which Capt
L jj Hernot of railroad surveying and
engineering fame is a branch In
that election COO votes were cast in
that county and one of the questions
involved was whisky or no whisky in
which king alcohol got worsted
There are many interesting items in
the RodLander but only n few adver-
tisements poorly displayed Iu those
days papers made their living few ever
make more than a scanty living from
subscriptions aud not advertisements
and the RedLander charged delin-
quents a rate of interest that would
make tho sub criber of the present day
howl with indignation Tho terms were
8200 in advance StJOO six mouths on
credit or 8400 one year on credit E
AI Pease was governor then and a com-
munication to him on the Mississippi
and Pacific railroad is published The
poper is somewhat of a curiosity and
the entire contents interesting

Just nt the present time ducks nre
numerous on all tho ponds in this
county are fat and afford excellent
sport for those who delight in hunting
A party of three went out from tho city
Wednesday evening each having a good
gun and all determined to bring back
game They droye to a pond where they
were sure they would find ducks nud on
arriving one of the party saw sitting
upon tho water with arched neck what
he was positive must be a duck He was
anxious to have first blood and
crawling under cover of a feucefollowed
by one of his compaui > ns he at last ar-
rived at u point ut which ho thought he
was in killing range aud ho raised cau-
tiously up to locate his object His
companion also took a look and when
he saw the supposed duck ho told tho
anxious uimrod not to fire us it was a
turkey which was standing on tho edge
of tho water nud must belong to some
of the neighbors The ovoranxious
sportsman was however positive that it
was a duck und was not going to be
talked out ot a shot by his friend con-
tending it was a turkey He leveled his
gun fired and the game fell Aglow
with his good luck he rushed to
tho waters edgo to get his game He
was not mistaken for it was a duck but
instead of being of the wild species it
was a common barnyard drake Somo
good housewife in the neighborhood
had given him n spring picking to got
fresh feathers for her pillows which
gave him the turkeyliko appearance
which so deceived one of the party Tho
successful shot however did not have
the courage to bring the tame duck
back to town and he was left on the
margin of the miniature lake Of course
if he had known it was a tamo duck ho
would not hove shot it Tho city attor-
ney should instruct hunting parties
who go out to be more careful or they
may have to pay fo some persons tame
ducks aud turkeys which they will kill

Worl has been kind ol dull in local

the last few weeks andabout all they have
had to do was to look atter county and

for wrong Hoersfp in abroad Tholattcr
however aflurdi even in the dnllet time
f omc work which does not permit an offi-

long bten known as one in which it is
hard tor a man to commit a wrong act
and escape and it is equally hard for a
man who does wrong elewhere to come
here and remain any length of time think-
ing he can lost in absolute seeurit from

however who will violate 1tw wherever
they get a chance and take all the risks ot
arrest and punishment In the last two
evenings the sheritl has turned over to

reports be true he bought a tough ca c
when he did so What a tual evidence
there may bo Hgrinst him we do not

arrested for forgery is said to be Dennis
AlcCartney and the chirge against him
is foiging an order tor payment ol a bal-

name ol the party u ed was Donahoe and
tho forged order amounted to about 1
We are fin ther told that AlcC ntney does
not deny the forgery or rather says he
does not know an thing about It as he
has been drunk for Lhe pa t week Ho
was taken to jail last evening where he
will have a better ehance to sober up and

a representative of this puper yesterday
called oi the lady and made inquiries
Iu answer to his questions Miss Couzius
said that she had every reason to behovo
that she would bo one of tho appointees
She was in receipt of letters from a num
ber of United States senators in which
their services were proffered aud their
assistauco promised Among these
letters were ono from Senator Vest and
one from Senator Cockrell Miss Couz
ius said sho was much surprised and cor-
respondingly pleased when she received
and read the letter from Senator Vestas
she had been of the opinion from tho
manner in which that gentleman treated
the woman suffrage question when it
was before the senate some time ago
that he was oppoued to the idea of legis-
lation by women or rather opposed to
any interference by women iu legisla-
tive matters The letter however was
exceedingly cordial and with tho letter
from Senator Cockrell is highly prized
by its recipient These letters from the
Missouri senators together with others
from iulluential men in Washington all
ondorsiug the candidacy of Miss Couziim
in tho highest manner the lady thinks
will go far toward securing for her tho
position The Missouri press and iu
